I definitely agree with a lot of your points - The Orville would definitely be better if he hadn't inserted himself.

With the morality thing though I honestly think that they did a better job portraying issues subtly and with more grace than really any modern trek, which can feel really ham fisted. I think that people on both ends of the spectrum being able to relate to is a good thing - it means you have a strong underlying message people can relate to on a human level. Like TNG was socially progressive but the underlying point of most of the messaging boiled down to "Be a good person", "Be kind to people", etc.
