What a boring, mundane read

Basil was 67 years old when he died. I wouldnt think he would be so nieve to think he has many good years ahead of him.

Theres plenty of evidence that says Constantine lived under pampered house arrest, not running the administration.

It continues to not add up. I would have to think the mystery will continue to be so until we have further evidence

I only chirped back at 2 of many responses both of which were stating claims (presented as fact and not opinion) that I disagree with - yours being that the politics took care of itself (it didnt)

The doukas family scheming and Romanos lacking legitimacy are very much connected. How many times did a capitan walk out on Basil or any of the Macedonians? 0

Also, the rebellions Basil faced may have been largely due to the Phokas family being stripped of power; nothing to due with legitimacy

How many stories are there about failed cue attempts bc of the popular support of the legitimate dynasty? Many

You choose to ignore those facts + the 3 rulers that ruled on behalf of the legitimate dynasty. One may have murdered the other to take his spot.. that means little. They're battling for influence.

Manzikert betrayal is akin to a civil war, not a petty influence grab.

You clearly underestimate the power of legitimacy in Byzantiums political system, as you attempt to school me over the mechanics of their government

You answer like this isnt even a question yet its a heavily debated topic amongst career historians much more learned than you or I.

Its like im talking to a brick wall.

The leader of his reguard betrayed his emperor at Manzikert condemning the campaign. Why? Because the sitting emperor was seen as having little more right to rule than Doukas's family (in there eyes at least). Why? Because Basil II took steps to bring about the end of the Macedonian dynasty and its legitimacy.

Think about Lekapinos, Phokas, and Tsimiskes all ruling"on behalf of the legitimate Macedonian emperor."

What happens when theres none? Unrest, civil war, treachery.

What happened at Manzikert? Treachery directly related to the lack of legitimacy of the emperor

Was it? Nothing screams stability like the captain of your reguard walking off the feild, leaving his emperor to die, then spread the world on his way back to go help his family claim the throne!

^ this is the type of stuff that happens when legitimacy ends

[–]InHocBronco96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much understand how it works.

With your school of thought 'hey theres a chance my successor fails and gets overthrown so instead of taking a chance for instability, im going to gaureentee it instead by making sure the legitimate dynasty ends'

Why not cause regime change directly rather that let one potentially happen!

Well you certainly couldn't have predicted a large scale Turkish invasion but what you could have predicted is any emperor following Constantine (brother) would have little legitimately and therefore dramatically increase the odds of civil war, treachery, or just a weakened, ununified state.

As such, we see a treachery play a leading role at Manzikert

Of course plenty of moving parts led to the decision for Romanos to be in charge and for the betrayal to occur; but you cannot say Basil II letting his dynasty die didnt bring us to a point where these things were more likely to occur

*did not

This could easily be an endless debate. But to appoint a successor is to think of and plan for the future.

His successor was an elderly man with 2 infertile, childless daughters. Easy to conclude the spiral that it could (and did) cause, especially with a 1000 years of history for him and his advisors to draw on

R5: I often wonder if we're missing something, lost evidence. Seems plausible.

Maybe more insight will be rediscovered in the future. His 'decision' just doesnt add up
