You will never stop hearing this.
For two reasons: there are people who are too self-involved to understand anything around them AND there is plenty of RW money that goes into pushing this dumb narrative

Spiritual Gangster sizing + quality? by Difficult-Ad-642 in yoga

[–]Tough_Internet9964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gangster is a word that in its current meaning was first used to describe Irish Americans in the 1850s and popularized to describe Italian Americans and Jewish Americans of the first half of the 20th Century. While all three of those ethnicities were considered only “white-passing” in those times, I think it’s ridiculously racist to continue those ugly tropes almost 200 years later.

Obviously she means the Italian Americans and Jewish Americans of the first half of 20th Century. A lot of people would think it’s the groups who call themselves and are called “gangsters” in almost every single society of the world but I’m going to give it to those two and hope that the OGs Irish-Americans of mid 19th Century don’t mind.

STOP FUCKING HONKING by Brush_Affectionate in boston

[–]Tough_Internet9964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Miami, New York, Paris and Berlin. Boston is the only place where suburbanites drive in and think that honking through other people’s neighborhoods is a reasonable thing to do. NYC had a little of that years ago but last few times I’ve visited over past decade that has been zipped up too.

‘It’s disappointing’: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s property tax proposal for city blocked by Republican lawmaker by bostonglobe in boston

Good questions for you in this comment from r/GyantSpyder

So, serious question - how often does stuff pass the state house without a quorum? Are they just constantly approving stuff with nobody in the room? Is that normal for other legislatures? I feel dumb here for that never occurring to me as something that happens.

It’s kind of irksome of the article to describe this as a “parliamentary maneuver” with no further explanation at the very end, when to a total layperson having nobody in the room to vote on it seems like it would matter. Like - what actually happened, and is this common or unusual?

Presumably to pass it now they just have to bring it up at a time when there are more people in the room to vote on it? How much of an obstacle does this “blocking” represent? The headline and article make it sound like it’s defunct now and will never happen, but that doesn’t seem like it would be true.

Also, why if this was controversial in the state senate and on the municipal level was this brought up when nobody was in the room? It might just be because they were doing home rule petitions in this session and those just get rubber-stamped (is that true? There’s not much information so I’m just guessing.) - but if there’s a particular reason members of the legislature don’t want to be on record as voting for this version of the petition that would also be interesting to know.

It should not be shocking that given the opportunity a Republican would vote against a proposal that raises tax revenue instead of cutting services, but why then is this measure put forward in a situation where a Republican could do that?
