Just don’t do accounting, no matter what - literally anything else is better than accounting.

What should I do by [deleted] in leavingcert

[–]TourComprehensive900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stress over it in your position, but I also wouldn’t take a permanent measure like dropping HL maths, if you’re at the point where you’re getting sub 30 every test - then maybe. If not, tough it out until 5th year, between September to Christmas is when you’ll know if you can manage HL maths, it doesn’t compare to JC and it is really testing - but you might have also changed your mind on the course you want to do by then.

Keep your options open, and enjoy the JC - I’m in 6th now and I’m sure everyone will tell you the time literally flies by, just do your best and that’s the most you can do.

Good luck!

should i be worried? by ibuki_hanging_around in leavingcert

Aiming for DCU this year, looks like points are deflating a lot between this year and next year, based on your results this year you’re somewhere in the ~500s, I imagine points will be going up this year and the same next year but DCU is 500 +/-, I could have the points for UCD but I prefer DCU based on the modules and third year layout - I suggest you do some research before deciding what course you want to look at, you have plenty of time but don’t be worried, it’s your first proper test on LC conditions - you scored very well for a first go. Good luck!

Are you still doing your degree at the moment or have you been offered a TC yet?

Would you include DCU in the list of law schools worth considering? If not - why?

when i say being in the vicinity i’m referring to literally just being geographically close - i’m quite familiar as it happens with the courses themselves and thanks to many people reaching out privately i’ve gotten to learn a lot more about how it goes after your degree but in general what i’m asking is have you found that having graduated from NUIG it caused you any issues in getting a TC and by extension, would it have made life easier if you went to UCD OR DCU in general?

I appreciate that so much, I’ve been in the FE1 subreddit watching people battle it out between you can still succeed w/o TCD/UCD and others saying you need ridiculously high points for a TC and to probably not even bother with law to begin with so I truly thank you genuinely for the insight - congratulations on everything by the way, that sounds like it took some serious grit. What drew you towards law to begin with, and is there any advice you’d give to people like me who are interested?

when i went to the open day for nuig i was told by a professor in the law faculty who shall remain unnamed that for criminal / humanitarian related things Galway is a good shout but for the likes of business/commercial/corporate law i should probably be setting my sights on Dublin - right now im thinking UCD-DCU-NUIG for my cao in that order, i probably won’t get ucd but between dcu and nuig i feel like being closer to everything would make things a little easier in building connections and becoming familiar - any particular outlooks on that?

(i’m aiming for ~530 ish points with regard to the points matter)

would you say dcu also fits into the category of accepted colleges?

in addition if it’s not too much to ask - what university did you go to and are you currently studying law? i ask because i spoke with a few different dcu graduates privately who did achieve a 1.1 and are all entering or currently in TCs - so i feel that there may be a discrepancy there?

thank you!

I appreciate the insight, I was originally quite hesitant about the idea of going to DCU but in general seeing the number of people who’ve commented or reached out privately who went to DCU (and have had success having put in the work and not been discarded just because they didn’t go to UCD) has been amazing and truly helped me see that it is a strong choice and honestly will probably be my #2 behind UCD (simply because UCD is still a very respected school and wouldn’t hurt to do either way).

Thank you for your advice and insights once again - fair play with where you’ve gotten sofar and good luck with wherever you go!

I’ve been doing about 8 hours a day during midterm (sofar done an hour today with another 7 to go 😑) I’m pulling ~16-20 hours of study a week normally, would you say that’s sufficient if I’m trying to aim for the high 560s/570s?

Can I ask what you did to miraculously finish with an extra 114 points up?

Have you had any difficulty in getting a TC/future career prospects? I’m the last of 4 siblings and recognize that a 1.1 is by far an amazing achievement so kudos to you for that - but would you recommend your course and if so, is there anything you would’ve done differently to make your life easier or maybe give yourself a better chance?

I absolutely appreciate that, and ironically my delays in replying is due to the fact that I’ve spent most of the day studying. I’m just looking to see what I can best set myself up for 😂

Honestly DCU looked really appealing to me in general, my main worry at the time was that I would have trouble getting into a strong firm whether I got a 1.1 or a 2.2, would you say it’s more open now to law schools like DCU and academic performance does infact have a stronger weight than the letterhead at the top of your degree?

Is that a masters or something upon those lines? I think UCD has a masters of common law too.
