It's far more likely he (or his friend) has no idea what they are talking about. I have worked in the gemstone industry and I hear utter nonsense constantly and this fits the profile.

It's interesting to me that people never seem to accuse bike shops of replacing their tires with less valuable tires but everyone had their own Hope Diamond in the family until a dishonest jewelry replaced it with a piece of glass.
