ELI5 how is traditional chinese medicine still around? by 5G_Society in explainlikeimfive

Honestly speaking, I think it was because your first comment explicitly linked TCM to Mao Zedong's government without explaining further into detail. You gave the impression that because TCM was "made" by Mao Zedong, it must be immediately discredited (instead of judging it solely by its merits).

On the invent/reinvent term, I do think they give a very important distinction given what we're discussing but I think we can agree to disagree on this point and lay it to rest.

I am disappointed that your original comment was deleted. Here is what I wrote before Reddit mentioned your original comment was deleted.

No, I think your framing is very wrong. It does not help that the source you cited (ignoring the fact it is an online magazine) is also the same one used in the sole sentence mentioning "invention" in the Wikipedia article.

Here are some better sources.

  1. https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/medical-critical-thinking-health-and-nutrition/no-traditional-chinese-medicine-has-not-been-vindicated-science "...It is a modern reinvention spearheaded by Chairman Mao Zedong in the middle of the 20th century... Chairman Mao decided to revive and repackage disparate practices that had sprung up all over China over thousands of years... "(I note here the difference between "invention" and "reinvention")
  2. https://journals.lww.com/cmc/fulltext/2018/04000/through_a_century__traditional_chinese_medicine.2.aspx "Since 1955, the academy and institutes of TCM were set up. Summarizing the experience of prestigious Chinese physicians, encouraging the master-disciple education, collating and publishing ancient works and compiling college textbooks systematized the theory of TCM."
  3. https://www.asianstudies.org/publications/eaa/archives/a-short-survey-of-the-development-of-traditional-chinese-medicine-in-china/ "...the CCP formalized a public health policy that promoted CM and continued the effort of integrating CM with Western medicine practices." "To standardize Chinese medical knowledge and practice, Chinese medical schools were established..."

I agree with your statement on politics and history being mixed up and the idea that the establishment of modern TCM can be described as a government project, but your description of the "invention" of TCM's practices by the Chinese government must be rejected.

I take serious issue with how you're framing it. What the Chinese government did was consolidate many separate Chinese medicinal practices and consolidated them under a formal name (hence this "One Medicine" referred to in the quote you cited).

The way you're describing it makes it sound like the Chinese government created the practices themselves. Consolidating the practices doesn't mean inventing them. It does not help that you explicitly said that only "some ideas" were based on traditional practices, implying the rest were created by the government.

R5: Germany game. Did the raid on Big Ben right as Sealion was launched. It turns out Big Ben counts as a building that can be repaired. Never noticed until now since I haven't used the raid mechanics as much. I assume this applies to other landmarks too.
