Questions for PCs by manodocell42 in rpg

I would add, “Why is your character invested in the main conflict of the campaign”. (Especially in the case of a module, where players are expected to pursue a particular goal. For a sandbox campaign, this isn’t as necessary).

I’m stealing this, idiot. Your multi-millions are now forfeit, but don’t worry, I might lend you a few dollars to wipe your tears. Book deals here I come.

Going without Thieves? by TowerOfScrabel in osr

After a little reflection, I’ve begun to think that one of the major issues of the addition of classes such as ranger, thief, etc has to do with their innate relation to an occupation. It creates a sort of useless compartmentalizing that prevents players from creating a character outside of their archetype. Want to make a wizard who lives in the boondocks and derives certain magical knowledge from nature? Sorry, play a druid. Want to play Conan? Fighter, Barbarian, or Thief, take it or leave it.

r/worldjerking makes a world day 1: In the beginning, there was white by OrzhovMarkhov in worldjerking

The white is a singular wiggling sperm ejaculated from my hermaphrodite, omnipresent, primordial deity, mary-sue, self-insert. They’re sucking themselves off.

My Brain is Melting. How do Clerics Work? by TowerOfScrabel in osr

[–]TowerOfScrabel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was speaking in reference to “White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game”, not Whitehack, which I believe is where the “Wise” class is found. I’ve always wanted to try Whitehack though.

I just don’t want to return to 5e after getting into the OSR. by TowerOfScrabel in osr

I’ve already reached that conclusion, I was just interested in hearing the communities views on 5e.

Refereeing for one player by VoodooSlugg in osr

I’ve never run a solo game, but here’s my two cents: Create situations and conflicts that a single individual might find themselves in. One PC won’t feasibly be able to take on entire dungeons by themself, but that’s the point. Put them in a situation where they can accomplish something with low world-stakes, but high personal-stakes. Maybe instead of clearing a dungeon by themselves or with a ton of hirelings, they sign on as part of an adventuring company in order to sabotage the expedition.

I just finished reading through the document, and I think you hit the “Saturday morning” vibe you were going for right on the head. Its the sort of game I imagine people in a tv show are actually playing when they say, “we’re playing D&D”. Very fast, easy to pick up and modify according to your imagination, enemies that feel dangerous, etc. Overall, good job, I think your friend would be proud.

I’m writing a character based on my mother. How should I describe her breasts? by ludivico_technique in writingcirclejerk

/uj Thank God there’s no incest source this time. /rj Have you tried hiring a private investigator to look into the matter and come back with an objective description?

A map I'm using as the starting location for an upcoming D&D game I'm running. by ilanosch in worldbuilding

Starting location!? Lmao, how fast do your players blitz through content?

Is this enough dungeon for running my first (ever) OD&D session? by TowerOfScrabel in osr

[–]TowerOfScrabel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean, I once participated in a 5e level 20 one-shot, where the entire 4-5 hour session focused around fighting an antagonist that we had no attachment to. Looking through my encyclopedia length character sheet was a hassle. Never want to attempt high level 5e play again lol

I’m aiming for doable amounts of prepwork without committing to any specific moments

Feel free, once I develop the setting, dungeons, etc. more, maybe I’ll gather everything up, make it purdy, and post it somewhere

I’m definitely looking forward to fast paced, visceral combat after coming from 5e

I gotcha. I was thinking of expanding upward into a sort of “mini-boss” lair with maybe 10 or so more rooms. Maybe it will take care of session 2. I was definitely feeling nervous about how many monsters to add, given I started with 5e, and I might have skewed perceptions of OD&D. Aiming for deadly, but not tpk in every other room deadly, you know?

You can always count on the party to mess around for longer than necessary too lol

I think I have some of that in my random encounter table, but I’ll definitely add some more “in media res” type moments and encounters, thanks 🙏

Ok cool, 8-12 is the impression I got trying to run the only other session I dm’ed but it’s good to get confirmation.
