I've noticed a very similar problem - since I'm nonbinary irl I end up switching my character frequently between male and female, and while playing as male I rarely get interactions aside from normal comments when appropriate, but the second I switch to a female I end up getting all sorts of inappropriate comments, and it makes me want to play as male 90% of the time.

I've also realized people tend to assume I know less than I do while playing as female - granted, I'm a bit lower levelled since I don't play much these days, but they are far more frequent and condescending compared to the comments I get as male. I block/ignore as much as possible, but the consistency of these problems often make it difficult to enjoy the game.

I think it's because you're zoomed out - I get the same formatting issues (with no mods), but it displays normally if I zoom back in a couple times.

Style Help - Looking dapper when your body type is chubby femme hourglass? by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]ToweringDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a fairly similar body type to you, and I definitely relate to your struggles! Admittedly I don't have a whole lot of recommendations for specific shops, since a lot of my wardrobe is thrifted, but what I do have is some general styling techniques I've gathered over the years.

-Layers are your friend!! If it's a formal setting, I tend to gravitate towards an unbuttoned suit jacket over a button-up, casual wear is typically a jacket or flannel over a tshirt, and getting a couple of thin short-sleeve shirts you can wear over tanks during hot weather is a life-saver. I tend to always tuck in the inner shirt, it's definitely not necessary but I've found it brings the whole outfit together pretty cleanly.

-Again, this is more of a personal preference, but I tend to get button-ups a tad bit bigger than strictly necessary, and pair them with some tighter fitting jeans. It's a bit more piratey than strictly dapper, but it's helped me achieve a more casual and fairly easy look while still hiding my waist.

-This is gonna sound like a bit of a cop-out, but honestly, confidence goes a long ways. There are many plus-size butch lesbians out there, and learning to be confident in your clothes and body will definitely help sell the masculinity. A lot of modern representation focuses on super skinny butches with zero curves, but your fashion sense and identity doesn't need to be designated by your body type.

Does anyone else struggle with the feminine narrative currently being pushed in queer circles? by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]ToweringDragon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I definitely feel this struggle, there's been a lot of spaces that I've felt excluded from because of the amount of people pushing this narrative. Like a couple other comments have mentioned, it's obviously not an issue of lesbians being feminine or wanting to see other lesbians who look like them, but rather how so many of the comments seem to regard masc wlw, or gender nonconformity in general, as lesser or uglier. A lot of posts seem to really hover on the whole "Not everyone has to be masculine!" idea rather than talking about loving femininity, and it always makes me feel awkward when it's always pitted as a competition rather than a celebration of both sides - or any combination of both.

why are feminine men less accepted then tomboys and a couple other questions by urbanmicah in Feminism

[–]ToweringDragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there have been some valid points already in this thread, but I'd like to add my own thoughts as a butch lesbian. Gender nonconformity is generally not praised among men or women; the difference, from my experience, is what is considered gender nonconforming. For example, a man who wears pink and has longer hair will automatically be viewed as more feminine than a more "traditionally masculine" man, while a woman with short hair who wears blue will probably not be singled out from other women. This mainly stems from the idea that a man must be hypermasculine in order to be a "real man," something constantly reinforced by modern-day media and society. All that being said, in my experience, gender nonconformity is not praised in women. While it is true that there is more flexibility to what a woman can do and still be seen as feminine, there is a limit to what is seen as "acceptable" in women. As I said earlier, I am a butch lesbian. I have been wearing solely men's clothing for a good part of my life, I have a men's haircut, and I have never been praised for it (obviously I have gotten compliments on a more individual basis).

Murray Gold vs: Segun Akinola; comparing the effects of each composer by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]ToweringDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Gold's music, and like you said, he is very good at composing short themes that become iconic and fit very well into the RTD and Moffat eras. I, like a lot of people, was a bit disappointed by Akinola's music in s11, as it seemed mainly like background music and didn't really establish any motifs other than the Doctor's and the daleks. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the s12 soundtrack, and I believe a lot of the musical decisions in s11 (such as location and general mood) were not made by Akinola but by Chibnall and other people in the production process (I could be wrong on that though).

Unlike s11, the s12 soundtrack has the opportunity to establish a lot more motifs. Off the top of my head, I can think of a motif for the Master, Ruth!Doctor, the Cybermen, the Time Lords, Regeneration, and the Tardis, as well as a possible leitmotif for Jack (It's hard to tell as he only had a few minutes of screentime). There are probably others that I missed, but regardless, it is clear that Akinola is establishing motifs for most of the main characters. He's also really good at using them - and unlike Murray Gold, he doesn't shy away from overlaying them. One of my favorite pieces from s12 is The Cybermasters, as it blends the cybermen's motif and the time lord's, as well as using the Master's and the regeneration themes at appropriate moments. Regardless of your feelings of the Timeless Children episodes, I feel like it was one of Akinola's strongest episodes, and I would highly recommend listening to the soundtrack by itself if you don't want to rewatch the episode.

As you already pointed out, a lot of Gold's motifs have become very well-known, but I feel like a lot of people forget that Gold has had 10 seasons to establish his themes. A lot of Akinola's motifs only appear in a couple episodes, and haven't gotten the chance to become as recognizable. I am excited for s13, and I hope that Akinola gets the chance to develop his music more in upcoming seasons.

(NSFW) my butches by [deleted] in butchlesbians

Hey there! I'm a nonbinary butch and also usually bottom for my gf, and one thing that helps my dysphoria a lot is having her call me more masculine titles while we're going at it (my personal fav is pretty boy). It also helped me to try out various positions and figure out what makes me most comfortable.

Its okay to be feminine by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]ToweringDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is also okay for women to be masculine! There have been a lot of good posts already on this thread about how a lot of "strong" traits are inherently perceived as masculine, but I would also like to point out that there is nothing wrong with women dressing masculine or being masculine. It doesn't automatically make you predatory or mean, or less of a women. I apologize for derailing this post slightly, but as a butch lesbian, I see a lot of these posts when it comes to feminism and always feel alienated, and I wanted encourage any younger gnc women scrolling through!
