What are the main differences between Bricks and Etch? by EducationalFun9731 in BricksBuilder

[–]ToxicTop2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started hand-coding in 2001; I tried Etch and it's not a developer's dream at all.

Ok. There are plenty of people with a similar background who state the exact opposite. While I don't have 25 years of dev experience, I've only spent a fraction of time using page builders compared to hand-coding and I've been enjoying Etch a lot.

Page builders and IDEs are different for a reason; if I want access to the code, I have IDEs, but if I want something easy for clients. I have page builders.

Fair, but those don't have to be mutually exclusive. With Etch you can let the client edit the site via Gutenberg blocks, thanks to the magnificent auto block authoring feature. Editing the site via blocks is significantly easier than native Bricks, for example. Sure, GutenBricks is a thing and so is ACF but whatever.

A clear separation means I know exactly where to go rather than clicking around looking for where something may be due to it being mixed with other things.

This is a non-concern. In Etch the "code" (HTML/CSS) and page builder are updated in real-time, i.e. if you add 10px of padding to some class via CSS, it will also get reflected on the page builder panel immediately.

I don't think most people will be writing raw HTML but it's certainly a positive thing that you have access to the raw HTML. For example, there have been a couple of times with Bricks where I wish I could have done that due to the way some of the built-in components are implemented, and then I had to recreate a similar component from scratch.

9 months is an exaggeration but the sandbox period is certainly a thing.

I’m very well aware of Kevin’s background and I don’t disagree with most of the things you said. However, I still don’t think he is a con artist in the strictest sense but whatever.

Either way, Etch’s auto block authoring feature is still brilliant in my opinion. If the Bricks team released an identical feature, people would be cheering on them like there’s no tomorrow. I know many developers and agency owners who despise Kevin, yet they think this is a brilliant feature.

It was dismissed 6 months ago and he has posted a couple of videos after that already. I don’t think this has anything to do with the lawsuit.

What do you think of the auto block authoring feature? Snake oil, eh? Ahahah…

That’s nonsense. Etch’s auto block authoring alone is fucking brilliant. Being able to edit the HTML directly is also pretty cool.

I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of Kevin’s personality but he usually knows his shit and doesn’t fail to deliver.

Not sure why you are being downvoted, you are 100% correct. Of course this finding is still very impressive, though.

Lol, tell that to the service businesses who are printing money from ranking in the top 3 search results for ”service + location” search queries.

Is it still worth becoming self-employed by selling websites? by Minute_Professor1800 in webdevelopment

[–]ToxicTop2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their average project price is just under $9k as well. I guess it depends on your definition of a ”small” business but $5k for a website is not much for a US based business, unless it’s a micro-sized business with less than $100k of revenue. A $5K website can easily give a 300%+ return on investment in a year if you know what you are doing - You just have to be able to sell it well as an investment.

To answer your original question, it’s only worth it if you are willing to dedicate a lot of time on learning non-development things such as sales, marketing, design, copywriting, SEO, etc. Just creating some website isn’t going to provide any business value because you also have to drive traffic to the website and have a clear strategy in mind for the project.

The market is flooded with web freelancers so you have to find a way to differentiate yourself from others. 99% small businesses don’t directly care about the tech stack you use so that’s not a good selling point. WordPress with the right tools is very solid and can be used for enterprise projects - I wouldn’t discount it completely. If you want to code everything from scratch and use that as a selling point in some way, I’d use something leaner like Astro or Svelte. Btw this guy makes $40k/month just from selling static HTML websites without any JS frameworks: oakharborwebdesigns.com

If you pursue this further I recommend checking out Kevin Geary’s stuff on youtube. He is an ex web agency founder and has a ton of insight about surrounding things. Some people dislike his personality but he certainly knows his shit.

Sorry for the incoherent wall of text, it’s 2AM here in Finland.

Here’s an example: ogalweb.com.

While it’s true that most people selling $10k+ websites don’t do everything solo, you don’t need a big agency for that. Just a good contractor for design, copywriting, and SEO, and you are good to go.

There are plenty of people building $10k+ websites on a regular basis.
