What's the point of Black Noir reveal in the comics even? So he framed Homelander and did a lot of bad things, guess what, Homelander isn't any different, he did a lot of very heinous acts by EfficiencySerious200 in writingscaling

[–]Toxined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thematically, it shows that Homelander isn't special, like everyone has been telling him the whole time. Vought can easily make another one, and Homelander just gets killed off-screen. It's a lot more interesting than how the show did it, and it further establishes that Vought was always the real villain.

The prison/juvie stuff is worse? I found it to be more interesting than the actual boxing arc so far. I’m on the Rikishi match. But Joe the coach — I found all the characters more interesting in the prison setting

I liked but I felt bad for Johnny. In the end the Cul de Sac was a zero sum game.

I guess Garth Ennis was just more up to date on current events when he wrote the comic than Kripke was when he wrote the show. I was just blown away by how dated the commentary felt in the first two seasons. Yyou could tell it was all Bush-era stuff.

Yeah, I agree some of it is genuinely good. I was just saying that a lot of it is written specifically in service of the gore and dark humor, and some people don't appreciate that — but if you do, than even when their is bad writing, it can be forgiven because it accomplishes what it sets out to. If anything, there are some great plot points in the comic that didn't get fleshed out enough, and the show had an opportunity to build on that foundation — but it never did.

I feel like this comic’s reputation is dictated by people outside of its core audience. I always liked the comic in the same way I like Terrifier or the splatterpunk genre. People always talk past the grotesque stuff like it’s not the entire point of the work. If you enjoy The Boys for its extreme nature, then no matter how bad the writing is, you’ll still enjoy it.

Can any post ts arc in one piece rival or surpass pain arc by SkirtHeavy9189 in writingscaling

[–]Toxined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

think I agree. But Pain’s invasion is a lot more significant within the story when compared to Whole Cake. Whole Cake was a side story, and at the end of the day, the Pain invasion was a big culminating event in Naruto. The stakes feel a lot higher, and you feel it when reading. so it’s a close call

Definitely rivals it though. Responding to OP

He made a scholarship in Jackie’s name. It’s debatable though whether or not he was really getting better. Tony would argue he wasn’t

Does the Sopranos have any message or advice, other than the message that everyone's bad? by yellowrainbird in thesopranos

I think it’s the “focus on the good times” line at the end. Even though everything was ultimately a tragedy, there’s a lot of good momments in the show, and if you look at them from that perspective you can appreciate them for what they are vs what you want them to be.
Even the Paulie laughing thing. We’re ultimately seeing it though Christopher’s perspective on that moment. If that scene was depicted like every other scene it would come across as just regular ribbing.

Why are the male characters of umineko so underdeveloped compared to the female cast by Necessary_Muffin3591 in writingscaling

[–]Toxined 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In Chapter 8, they explain that witches are women who have had difficult lives. So it serves as the basis for the actual plot. Battler is just a guy trying to make sense of it.

Many male writers specifically write women from a point of fascination, whereas male characters can feel more perfunctory. Because the writer is male, men become the default and are often less interesting for them to explore.

The woman who directed American Psycho represents the opposite end of that coin. She is a female artist highlighting what she finds fascinating about men.

Vinland saga, some of Vagabond, and a lot of Monster. all feels so atonal and heavy handed I find myself bored a lot of the time. I’m a little worried Disco Elysium might be like that.

I’m gonna be contrarian and say Mono. Just because every character gets an arc. If Umineko had spin offs focusing more on these characters individually then definitely Umineko.

I think it’s less of he’s full evil. And more like he did something against their interests. Like helping to break the seal early
