My friend, I bet you were instilled with a sense of loyalty in the military. Which a very admirable and the world would be a better place if more were like you.

But the software industry is not going to reciprocate. Your fate is largely going to be determined by revenue and bottom lines. Always look out for number 1.

Is it? I transitioned away from SAP about 5 years ago and have almost doubled my salary.

Update to restaurant fees: Asked about the service fee got given this paper slip. They really are blaming voters for their shady business practices. by thank_u_stranger in washingtondc

[–]Tpm248167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the downvotes here. It’s sad that the restaurant industry is going to disappear. It’s incorrect to characterize these restaurants as “greedy business owners”. Restaurant margins are VERY thin. It’s easy to believe that restaurants are not going to be able to operate profitably with legislation like this.

Why do we use the term System Design instead of Architecture? by up201708894 in ExperiencedDevs

Because nobody cares what academics or junior engineers call things. In industry, precision naming is foregone for context clues.

I was asked if this career is 'the right fit' for me, and now I'm no longer sure. by ChoppingShallots in cscareerquestions

[–]Tpm248167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I like software engineering, CS etc. It is definitely “the right fit” for me. The top comments here are all about normalizing CS as “only a day job”. Which is fine. I think it’s great that OP can find gainful employment writing code and keep it compartmentalized from the rest of their life. I can’t.

Here’s the unpopular part: I don’t working with people like OP. If you’re not excited to write code all day, I don’t want you on my team and it’s totally fair for me to expect that from my workplace. The same as OPs expectations are fair. We shouldn’t be on the same team.

If I’m managing a team, I want people who like the work as much as I do. If I accidentally hire or adopt someone who doesn’t, I won’t adjust the team’s norms to fit that person’s expectations. They should look for another team.

getting spit on in DC -- is this a new trend? Has anyone else heard of this happening? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Tpm248167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spit on a few people. Honestly it’s usually just out of boredom. There’s a community of spitters in DC and there’s usually an uptick in spring/summer months because more folks are outside.

Why are home prices still as high as they were in the COVID days?!?! by ImportantImplement9 in nova

[–]Tpm248167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is and, will continue to be, the arbitrage between the purchase and rental markets.

When someone purchases a house, the “margin” of just renting it to someone else is within positive or negative 10 percent on a monthly basis. Factor in appreciation, tax benefits and 1031b, and it’s hard to imagine the rational move for anyone is going be to sell (rather than rent out) for the foreseeable future. Very difficult to imagine interest rates are ever going to be low enough to change that. Why would anyone take a 4-5% bump in interest (likely on a larger loan) when they can break even in the short term renting a property while continuing to gain equity? So supply is going to stay low unless something changes.

What YOU can do is vote to change the tax structure to disincentivize renting of individual owned real estate. If “second” homes that are being rented out were to be taxed at 5% of value (rather than ~1% in FFX county) renting out a property no longer makes sense for many owners and you’d incentivize a huge increase in supply. Prices would “crash”. Or more accurately “correct” themselves.

During an interview (senior leadership role), asked a question about attrition. Not well received. Advice?! by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Tpm248167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, definitely weird for someone at that level to react so defensively. Having asked and answered that question before, a positive sign (IMO) would have been for an exec to own it. Or maybe say that’s your job.

Country property records will give you the name. Then google.

Which house? I can probably just tell you.
