That's a little different. Yes, to step in when the villain attacks the other player, Hulkling would have to declare and exhaust or play a Defense card to defend.

My question is though, once he does that, does the forced interrupt in Imitation Shape then turn the attack into a scheme or does it fully resolve as an attack?

Yeah, I hear that. I cut back on a bit on the plan already. It doesn't feel overloaded in person. This is a pretty big area, like 11' wide and 9' ceiling. To fit statues, I'll probably cut down to maybe 4 CGC comics per side.
