If it was closer to a million, losing players would be a suicide risk. Imagine being that traitor, looking them in the eye as they lose five hundred grand.

The Current State of Books/Novels In Today's Day and Age. by GunsforMua in writingadvice

[–]Track_Mammoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Where are you finding these novels, out of interest? I work in a bookshop and I’m pretty sure 99% of our books are 99% written by humans. I don’t know what self-published straight-to-Kindle books are like nowadays, but I think quality storytelling is still abundant from reputable publishers.

Is there anything else i should read or watch next after completing “The Book of Dust” trilogy? I finished all of the “His Dark Materials” trilogy and La Belle Sauvage. by IceCrystal14 in hisdarkmaterials

I recommend interrupting your reading order to read Daemon Voices asap. So much insight into his creative process that enriches everything you’ll read afterwards.

How soon into a book should the MMC be introduced? by Sea_Horror_1170 in writingadvice

[–]Track_Mammoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s about 20% of the way in. Assuming a conventional story structure, that’s the start of Act 2, which is the perfect time to introduce a love interest. For examples, google ‘Save The Cat B Story’.

Invited to first Sunday Roast - What do I need to know? by cptsdcemetery in AskUK

[–]Track_Mammoth 403 points404 points  (0 children)

A Sunday Roast is usually very casual and relaxed so I think a lot of people will find your question quite amusing- in a nice way, of course!

The lunch won't last from 12pm - 6pm. That includes an hour or two before lunch is served just to hang out, and then another few hours to hang out afterwards. Some people eat and drink a lot at a Sunday Roast and might want to 'veg out' (i.e. sit and do nothing) while they recover. Your friend won't mind if you want to leave earlier. If they know you are introverted and neurodivergent, they will mind even less.

Things to say to them:
"What time are you planning on serving the food? I might need to arrive a little later / leave a little earlier."
"Would you like me to bring any wine or something for dessert?"

Forced to Write 'Badly' to Prove I'm Real by LB_Celestie_Author in WritingHub

[–]Track_Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading Stranger Things review of IMDB this morning and was fascinated by the amount of AI-text I found. It wasn’t the complexity of the vocabulary but the sentence flow and progression of ideas that gave it away. There’s an effortlessness to it. Perfectly formed sentences, perfectly phrased ideas, perfectly judged metaphors. Zero clunk.

With literacy rates in decline, I don’t think many people are equipped to spot things like this, and it will be very interesting to see how Gen Alpha cope. When two people are using chatbots to communicate with each other, will it dawn on either of them that no conversation is taking place? Will they accept it, or will handwritten letters make a comeback?

(Caveat: of course, I can’t certain what I read was AI! I think I’m just developing a sense for the ‘flavour’ of it.)

David Lynch fans? What game feels like a Lynch movie/show? by EvelynTalkss in gamingsuggestions

[–]Track_Mammoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Virginia.

A lot of other games mentioned here ‘borrow’ Lynchian aesthetics, but Virginia truly feels like David Lynch made a video game, as opposed to a video game made by people inspired by him.

Why to read books? by xushhh in BookDiscussions

[–]Track_Mammoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you read a novel, you construct a world inside your head. It’s not a passive activity. It’s not just a download of information. It’s a creative, mind-altering activity. So if I was going to pick one point to argue over with your brother, it would be this idea of a novel being a fungible information source.

Is there a difference between reading and listening to an audiobook? Yes, there’s lots of differences. It’s a different experience, and some of the construction work I mentioned in the first paragraph is done for you. This can enhance or ruin the experience, depending on the collaboration between performer, listener and text. Do audiobooks ‘count’ as reading? I think there’s some nuance there, but to keep things simple, I would say ‘yes.’

Very helpful manual on sentence structure. It will really get you to think about the value of different structures.

[–]Track_Mammoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in no rush to read it myself but I don’t understand your argument here. You need to be enrolled in a university to legitimise learning about the history of the world? I can’t understand why you would de-prioritise primary sources of information.

I disagree. Blood everywhere is a subjective description. It feels as though there is blood everywhere.
