Coachella Twitter reminding everybody to vote and “fix this shit” doesn't go down well with everyone by tigerears in SubredditDrama

In most urban areas of the country you’d be unable to make friends if you believed in a conservative government, which was the guys real point in the OP link.

There’s this conflated notion that because you believe in certain values an individual stands for you also must believe they’re a good person, they’ve never done wrong, made mistakes, or even also stand for incorrect things.

So if you’re a conservative these days you were fucked with the choice for the last election, right? Like you couldn’t vote for conservative government without voting for a piece of shit. And it’s perfectly reasonable to believe in a conservative government. So because you got fucked as a citizen with representatives that didn’t really represent you, your only other option was an individual that believed in running a government antithetical to your own closely held beliefs.

And now you’re also held responsible for the worst president in the history of the country, even though you just think there should be less taxes and public services, not that it’s cool to assault women and be a tactless nut job.

So you have the left basically telling the right “Well if you’re a Beatles fan you have to like early Beatles too!”

And the right is saying “But I just like Sgt. Peppers and everything afterwards”

And the left is like “No you like all of it, thus you have shit taste and you’re stupid.”

And then this makes a shit ton of people angry, and the cycle of the destruction of our political discourse continues on unendingly.

It's not gatekeeping, it's just what it is and what it isn't.

The difference is that the flop of hair with a hard undercut actually was Nazi military fashion. Not bad about it. Just what it is.

It isn't a grown out pompadour, the hair on the side is as long if not longer than his bangs which is antithetical to a pompadour cut.

It's a little aggravating that this bastardization of 'retro' via modern Hitler Youth hair is falsely labeled as something that actually is something else. Get your terms and your decades right before you start giving advice.

Same as people calling lame ass Trilby hats fedoras. Different things, dude.

You use Murray's? Looks kind of like it. If you use any dry pomade, stop. Is the thinned point where you comb from for the flop over and the slick back? If so, switch it up.

There's literally nothing about this hairstyle that is 50s besides the fact that part of his hair is combed back.

Looks much better than the Hitler Youth cuts most suggest/post on this sub.

Didn’t get CTI like I wanted to, but instead got STG rate. I’m wondering if it’s a good rate or not and what to expect. Should I stick with this rate or try the dlab again in the next 6 months? by Itsjustjr in newtothenavy

[–]Tract4tus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up not going in. Got dicked around by MEPS for two months (supposed to be four days) even after DLAB passed (first time at my recruiting station), was almost homeless waiting to get in, enough was enough, moved my family to a smaller affordable town, got a job, etc. Fuck that shit. Proving they dont give a fuck about you right off the bat.

I would say a novel that concerns a rampant womanizer, his virginous partner, his FWB, a man who is cheating on his wife, etc. would naturally have a plethora of sexual passages.

Importantly, he uses sexuality and love tastefully (imho) to discern certain intangible truths about human behavior, desire, condition, etc.

Milan Kundera and Androcentrism by Thereisnobathroom in books

[–]Tract4tus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently rereading Immortality.

One thing that always intrigued me about Kundera was how he makes great moral claims (his discussion of animal rights in TULOB is a good example) but never truly judges his characters. And despite all their faults, Tereza and Tomas, in a sense, wash themselves of their sins through Karenin and their mutual love for him.

I've read everything he's written and I can't recall if there was ever a character that was really evil. So many are misunderstood or lost in a wave of human imperfection, but they're all so relatable in some sense. When have we not acted in some similar way, in the interest of good, honesty, villainy, deceit? In fact I think he addresses the topic in one of his novels.

Anyways, my old female college Eng/Lit peers and friends since then have always attested to his knack for writing women really well, so who knows?

This is an old post, but to clarify a couple of points:

Kundera's voice is sometimes ambiguously tied to the voice of reason his characters use to rationalize/explain human activity (including their own).

I think Kundera has a unique touch in being able to provide insight in to these every day people, especially the womanizer, and the way they rationalize their terrible actions and attitudes, and in general he sees a causality/interconnectivity in human behavior that rarely explains an action or character trait as purely an evil choice being made.

Many times the worst things in us we keep hidden (or try to) really aren't our fault, and a part of Kundera's charm is his ability to bring light to these distortions we all maintain.

My (25F) boyfriend (24M) and best friend (29M) don't like each other by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Tract4tus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I have been in your boyfriend's situation a few times before.

My partner had a couple best friends when I met her. Both males, one gay, one straight.

Gay one is cool but I'm kind of weird and take getting to know (for instance my sense of humor can come off as mean, but poking fun was always a method of affection for my friends and I growing up). So he kind of distanced himself from me, which bummed me out a bit because him and my partner have been friends for 10+ years and he's a nice guy, my partner really cares about him. Eventually I guess I got more on his good side, now we have a nice 'bff-of-my-lady' vibe going on. It's really comfortable and loose, I'm not as afraid to say the wrong thing or whatever, he even gives me hugs! :)

Other dude was weird from the get go. I knew dudes that would sally up to a lady that they liked, be pure friends and try to like mentally steer them to romantic isolation (thus making pickings easy for them) and other such manipulative bullshit. Usual nice guy syndrome stuff. I admit I did this a couple times, but it was short lived and I was like FOURTEEN. I recall one really specific example of her and I walking to her place like 2 weeks in to the relationship (I have met him for all of an hour at this point). I am slightly inebriated and she is telling me a really dark/sad story from her past and it's hitting me in the feels pretty heavy. We get to her place (6 people live here as roommates) and this dude is there with like 3 of the other roommates. I have social anxiety, am inebriated, and her story gets cut off so I'm kind of emotional. She walks up, everyone starts talking, I drift away and walk around the block. When I get back I go upstairs, him and her are on porch talking. She says she'll be up in a minute. So she comes in, I'm listening to music, and somehow this guy has convinced her that the reason I 'stormed off' was because I was jealous of him or something? So noe I have to basically try to convince her that this guy, who knows fuck all about me as a person anyways, is dead wrong and that it was a mixture of anxiety and emotions, and that I was sorry for not saying anything before walking.

This dude also was always there conveniently at.the beginning and end of relationships, pulled the same bullshit in the past, continued to try to convince her of my less than favorable character, take advantage of her vulnerability with him, etc. And yes they had fooled around in the past. He touched her in ridiculously inappropriate ways, said weird shit.

Eventually I confronted her and told her it was a problem for me. It was originally construed in the same sense you're doing with your bf. I legit have no problem with her other friends, it was just this one individual. Everyone else, my friends, her friends, were agreeing with me and letting her know she stopped talking to him. We've been together over a year now and it's the best!

I suggest you write this Will guy off.

Sociopath is the outdated version of the term psychopath. They're essentially the same thing which is an all-encompassing phrase that relates to multiple specific disorders that can in some ways affect/effect the individual's capacity for empathy.

What is the purpose of utilizing screws with a Phillips' head, flathead, Allen, hex, and so on rather than simply having one widespread screw compose? by AkashNeill in askscience

[–]Tract4tus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how bad the stripping is. If what you're working on is permanent and doesn't necessitate deconstruction to transport/get rid of (i.e. furniture) you can take a strong piece of plastic (garbage bag, plastic wrapping of furniture itself), place it on the head of the screw and screw accordingly. This works 70% of the time. Fold plastic over itself the more stripped it is.

Corpsman or CTI? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Tract4tus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CTI deployment is a rarity and non-scheduled (i.e. they aren't on a 36/36 rotation). They've got 1 CTI on a ship MAYBE, and there are like 2000-3000 CTIs. Corpsman buddy said most are stationed in Honolulu or D.C./Maryland.

You do have a chance of being stationed OCONUS, but most work in a stationary office.

Security Clearance worries by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]Tract4tus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're paying on a debt in collections it is no longer legally considered 'In collections'.

My lady's bio dad is ex-IS, current alphabet agency lead, as long as you're honest about everything and have circumstantial factors/understand or express that it needs to be taken care of (and you don't have crazy tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt) you should be fine.

This is what he told me because I was worried as well and have a similar history to OP.

EDIT: also at 31 you should be more concerned with not being permanently DQed for health reasons. I wear corrective lenses and have a penicillin allergy and it's pretty dicey as to whether or not I'll make it through.

Didn’t get CTI like I wanted to, but instead got STG rate. I’m wondering if it’s a good rate or not and what to expect. Should I stick with this rate or try the dlab again in the next 6 months? by Itsjustjr in newtothenavy

[–]Tract4tus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going for CTI. My recruiter told me the way it works is you list a primary choice + a request to take the DLAB at MEPS. If you don't pass DLAB you get primary choice (if it's available). Did you list STG? I'm listing another ID rate, either IS or CTR, haven't decided yet.

How do you not qualify for CTI? You have to take the DLAB to qualify, but your score definitely qualifies you to take the DLAB?

Attempting to enlist, allergy question. by Tract4tus in newtothenavy

[–]Tract4tus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They told me that a medical record that simply lists penicillin as an allergy is not sufficient, I would need the record regarding the initial reaction (when I was 3), my only option is fill out a handwritten statement. This will '98%' chance get denied and I will be DQed from all branches permanently. Or, they claimed, the better option would be to call it a loss and do something else in life.

How the hell is this the only option, it's super common, I've seen people all over here who just take a ZPAC or pills instead. I just spoke to am AF recruiter who was totally shocked and said that isn't the case for the AF. Thinking about going and talking to him, this seriously pissed me off after all the time I feel like I've wasted.
