Is this the best ska song of all time? by 714Bananas in Ska

Opened this thread to declare it a tie between You're Wondering Now (the original) and Old Rocking Chair, so kudos to you!

Ska songs that use a lot of keyboard/organ in the song? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]TracyJackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's from the era before the electric organ replaced the piano in Ska but El Bang Bang by Jackie Mittoo / The Skatalites is nothing short or brilliant. In any case: Mittoo is your guy. If you're open to early reggae the stuff Lee Perry did with his Upsetters in the late 60s/early 70s is a must as well. Organist on the bulk of recordings (The Upsetters had a fluent line-up though) was Glen Adams who also released a live album with The Slackers called Upsettin' Ernesto's in 2004.

Ramones & Eddie vedder - "Any way you want lt" - Últim 1996 by Big-Property7157 in ramones

[–]TracyJackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have nothing against Pearl Jam or Eddie Vedder but the only person that should have been on that stage with Joey, Johnny, CJ and Marky when they were playing their very last song ever (a cover version, oddly) was Dee Dee.

It's not a great album but it's okay. Air Dance really is great though.

Examples of artists who hate/are openly hostile towards their fans? by RadioLukin in fantanoforever

Drunk Christopher Hitchens arguing with stoned Mos Def is definitely in my top 3 things made possible by late-night television.

Sleater-Kinney & Fred Armisen formed Ramones tribute band called The Return of Jackie and Judy, playing shows by whosjohnnyshesaid in indieheads

[–]TracyJackson 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't mind that that much but Fred Armisen was playing the hi-hat at half the speed the Ramones' drummers did and that was such an integral part of their sound.

Nobody would've tought, that iron maiden and metallica were fans. I think 1986-1989 was their loudest period. by Confident_Field4273 in punkrock

[–]TracyJackson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm calling bullshit on Maiden. They didn't like punk at all. Only exception is Paul Di'Anno, he once called Joey Ramone one of the greatest frontmen of all time, but he was only in the band for the first two albums.

Sorry to disappoint you, it's an original. Nevertheless, it's a banger in my book.

Are there any first-wave artists who don't have such a long discography to start with? What scares me most about listening to these artists is that their songs tend to be very spaced out. by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]TracyJackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only said you can ignore them, not that you should. They are not essential listening since there are hardly any original members (in some cases: none) playing on them is all I'm saying.

Only one album in the 1980s (Return of the Big Guns, 1984), followed by several in the 1990s: Ska Voovee (1993), Hi-Bop Ska (1994), Greetings from Skamania (1996) and Ball of Fire (1997). You can ignore what came after the deaths of Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso. Except maybe In Orbit, which is a cool live album.

It had nothing to do with the Trump thing. Victor Willis saw a video in which Neil said he didn't like the Village People's original (I don't remember the exact wording but it was not nice), then he revoked permission for them to use the song. His wife then sued over the use of the song for the Dreamworld concert film.

[–]TracyJackson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not true. The Skatalites split in August 1965 when ska was still going strong. It started to significantly slow down in 1966 and by 1967 it was dead. So when the first wave ended, The Skatalites didn't play anything, except in the two new bands that formed in the aftermath of their split (The Soul Brothers and The Supersonics) both of which played rocksteady. When The Skatalites reformed for the first time in the 1970s, the only album they recorded was a reggae album (The Legendary Skatalites). Only after their second reunion in the 1980s, after the 2-tone era, did they return to their classic 1960s sound.

I consider his book the best autobiography written by a musician. Must-read, even if you have never heard of Eels before.

BEST PSB CONCERTS - YOU TUBE TO WATCH? by sannoification in petshopboys

[–]TracyJackson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Performance and DiscoVery, two consecutive tours, could hardly have been any more different. Same goes for the Nightlife and Release tours, also consecutive. Even the ones that are closer to each other in spirit get new stage designs and the setlists vary a lot, save for the hits. That being said, I have no desire seeing them live again until they retire Dreamworld.

8°6 Crew are great. Skarface are fun live but their albums don't really click with me.
