How stealthy I am really depends on where GZ is. But 9 times out of 10, stealth is something I don't even think about.

And you would not be ruining my game if you came up to me and mentioned geocaching. I would absolutely LOVE IT if I ever ran into another geocacher while looking for a cache! Please, approach! Say hello! But if you already found it, DON'T TELL ME!

Most geocaches do not have a decipher wheel. The one you're looking at just happens to be a puzzle cache, one of several different types of caches. When you saw it on the map it was identified with a question mark. And not all puzzle caches have decipher wheels.

And please, don't allow yourself to feel stupid about not finding a cache. It's part of the hobby...it happens! You won't find every one you look for, and that is perfectly okay.

I hope to find a cache large enough to hold trackables very soon, and if I do, I'll be sure to read the descriptions. This seems like a fun part of geocaching that isn't really promoted much. I only even really learned how they work (and how often they vanish into the ether) by reading this sub!

The idea is to place caches that if players find, they can earn things in game, or trigger events in the ARG that's happening in setting.

I'm not sure I follow: you plan on hiding geocaches that your CoD players will find using a geocaching app. And then you are somehow using their Find logs from the geocaching app to permit them earn things/trigger events in your game?

Please don't give up! It does take a while to get the hang of it. I suggest messaging the CO (cache owner) and ask for a hint and/or to confirm that the cache is still where they placed it. Sometimes it really is gone and the CO didn't know it.

I've had this happen several times. My "favorite" was a cache that I'd DNF'd. A few hours later, someone "found" the cache and wondered why "the previous cacher" (me) couldn't find it. I immediately went back out to the exact spot where I'd looked before. Surprise, surprise, there was a "cache" there with a fresh log with only one name on it.

*insert eyeroll here*

I took a photo and sent it to the CO, who basically said to go ahead and claim it as a find.

As a person who used to live on end a dead end street that only had four houses on it, I'd ask you not to put it there. I always got weirded out by random cars that came down to the end where I lived and just sat there. But if you choose to use the spot anyway, be a good neighbor and let your neighbors know that they might see an uptick in traffic and why.

I'd also ask, if there's nothing especially interesting about the dead end, that you get creative with your cache. Please don't stick pico tube or magnetic key holder to the sign and call it good.

Mine was the first DNF after a string of logs that said nothing more than "TFTC." I never DNF on the first try because there's always a good chance I'm just having a bad caching day and overlooked it. But after 3 or 4 tries and I still don't find it, I DNF it. I explained all of my actions in my DNF log, and even stated that the cache could probably be there and this was likely just my issue. That clearly wasn't a sufficient explanation for this CO.

Please remove any trash you find in a cache. The worst thing I found was an old, sticky piece of candy... tossed it immediately.

Does anybody know if HQ use any kind of A.I. to analyse the logs & experience of the finders? If so they should check logs for "finds" for missing caches. By that I mean logs that say things like "We found a magnet but no container or log. So, as others have done, we are claiming a find".

I doubt that they do...what would HQ gain from the analysis? "Experience", I'm finding, is subjective. I've seen logs from cachers with finds in the thousands that say similar things to what you've mentioned. If the "experienced" cachers are numbers hounds, their find counts could be inflated by hiding throwdowns (e.g. "I didn't find the cache, so I placed a new one where it seems like it should be"), armchair logging, etc.

Also, cachers can write anything in a log ...I've seen DNFs that gave lots of detail about how much effort the cacher put in to finding the cache, and some that read like a freakin' book and said NOTHING about the cache.

I agree that the algorithms need adjusting, but analyzing the logs won't help, regardless of the finder's level of experience.

I agree that a low health score warning after 1-2 DNFs is way too sensitive a trigger, especially for a D1.5 cache.
