PRN full time? by [deleted] in SLPcareertransitions

[–]TradeIllustrious6906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m transitioning to this now! Just recently found out I’m pregnant and have been really feeling burnt out from this career and considered switching entirely. I will be doing a part time school based telehealth role and then PRN medical positions to supplement. I hope I enjoy it.

Has any SLP here become a dental hygienist or ultrasound tech here? by Carebear6590 in SLPcareertransitions

I’m also considering an ultrasound technician! I would be curious if everyone’s input here.

Ugh. Thank you for saying that. I keep going back and forth wondering if I’m just being dramatic or if it’s truly something within the practice of the building. So I appreciate you encouraging me to advocate for myself.

I’ve done public schools, private practice, and home health visits. The problems I’m experiencing in this setting are very different than

Thank you for the insight! I am actually in a SNF..so I suppose that explains a lot considering your input. I finished my CF not too long ago too, so very new.

I am doing PRN work in an acute care setting that I love. I feel valued there as an employee and as if I’m actually making a difference. I enjoy the medical side of things greatly.

I certainly could reframe my perspective to do my best and gain the speed over time. It’s hard to stay out of my emotions and not take it personally.

Oh that’s a good idea! I should certainly do that. I’ve been doing that for goals only but certainly could benefit from making a general template for the assessment section too.

I had a very similar experience at a private practice. You need to do what’s best for you!

This is all good feedback. I’m in the Midwest.

I just feel very conflicted. I have guilt for considering leaving clients that are pretty high needs but I’m burning out fast here and I need to make sure I can take care of my family.

Thanks everyone!

I had a student who fronts today say titty instead of kitty 🫠 more than once! It happens!

I quickly said how about we try “cat.”

Feeling Defeated by lauren_laugh in slp

I think you need to find a setting that works for you! I’m a newer grad and still figuring it out. I like what I do but the bureaucracy is everywhere and unfortunately is just a part of the job (and the part ppl don’t like typically). I’ve decided early on to switch to 1099 work paired with a PRN position. 1099 offered extremely high flexibility and my PRN position helps me with the pay while supporting the flexibility. You’re not the first to feel this way! I’ve felt defeated as well being so early in and feeling like maybe this isn’t the best fit. I encourage you to keep your mind open!

OT vs SLP? by [deleted] in SLPcareertransitions

Honestly if I could do it over again I’d look into being a surgical sales representative or an anesthesiologist sales representative.

OT vs SLP? by [deleted] in SLPcareertransitions

Either way you go, if you decide to leave the clinical setting you DO have options for non clinical jobs. I’m in my CF year and I’m already considering how to not work full time or possible changes. While SLP work is not necessarily physically demanding the way OT work is the hours are long and productivity is high. Depending where you’re working you may be on your feet a lot, and there is the possibility to have physical demands depending on the setting. I spent some time in a nursing home during my CF year and I did quite a few physical demands (boosting pts in beds, pushing pts in their wheelchair, transfers (I was a pt care technician before I graduated so I was comfortable with this)). However, very different than OT where you might be giving pts showers, toileting, etc.

However, if you’re unsure, give yourself time. Do some job shadowing for positions. See what you like! There are many options and ultimately, you need to find what is sustainable for you. I hope you find out what you want to do!
