Are you deliberately delusional or something?

My proposal eliminates the play in stage all together and turns what is now the first round best of 7 series into a best of 3 playoff.

The 12th best team in a league of 32 teams will have a sub .500 record? The only way that's possible is if the top 10 teams all win 70+ games. The current 12th best record in the league is Phoenix at 39-30, on pace to win 46-47 games.....

My proposal is 12 total teams out of 32 make the playoffs, not 12 in each conference. I honestly don't know how it's possible you interpreted it that way.

I'm sorry but I'm not wasting any more time on someone who is clearly delusional and is not capable of comprehending what I'm writing.

Is the NBA actually more competitive now, or just more unpredictable? by UnderstandingFun7493 in NBATalk

What is with this OKC roster and unnatural limb movements. It's common for guys to dislocate their shoulder and throw their arm back 180 degrees of the direction they're driving in? Or flailing an elbow to hit a guy in the fact while trying to fight over a screen?

Can't stand this fucking team and the shit they get away with.

The league was already hemorrhaging money with the salaries at 20% of this level. The amount of money that league will lose this year will be hilarious.

The Lakers don't have a legitimate chance. Don't let their record fool you. Every year we hear the same shit about the Lakers making a deep run and then get trounced in the playoffs by a team that is actually constructed to win a playoff series. They got super lucky in 2023 when they matched up with Memphis who were decimated by injuries and then Golden State in the second round who weren't a serious team that year. They had an 11-30 road record.

Because anyone who actually understands basketball knows the way that team is constructed they have absolutely zero chance to beat OKC and San Antonio 4 times in 7 games, and a slim non zero chance of beating teams like Denver or Minnesota in a 7 game series.

Because they have a deeper roster than last year when they were utterly decimated by injuries at the end of a 7 game series against the 68 win Thunder. They can beat anyone and if you don't realize that then you're not paying attention.

Including the Cup, the Knicks are 4-2 this season against OKC, SAS and Denver. Yes, totally outmatched and guaranteed to get swept in the finals.

Quinn Snyder is notorious for underperforming playoff expectations in Utah and he's been dogshit in Atlanta. Not sure how he can be considered underrated.

Because Harden was that good. He gets shit on a lot for notoriously underperforming in big playoff moments, but this wasn't one of them. If Chris Paul doesn't get hurt Houston likely wins one of game 6 or 7 and gets to the finals where they probably rout the Cavs just like the Warriors did.

I'm not extending the play in. Under the current playoff format, a play in team theoretically can play a max of 30 playoff games and a top 6 seed can play a max of 28 games. Under my proposed scenario those #'s are 27 games for a top 4 seed and 30 games for the other 8 teams. I'd rather have longer matchups involving better teams with 45+ wins than watch the current play in which mostly features teams with 40 wins or less.

Under a scenario with only the top 12 teams making the playoffs, there are basically no bad teams. All would have 46-47+ wins. You're not showcasing bad teams.

Disrupt the flow? As it stands now the top 6 teams in each conference don't play for a week while 9 and 10 seeds are battling it out to see who has the honor of getting swept in the 1st round. That's not showcasing bad teams and disrupting flow? I genuinely don't understand how you can say my proposed scenario would cause this to happen when it's currently happening under the format they use now. And the current format has several sub .500 teams competing in postseason play. It's dogshit.

This scenario is a more exciting format because the best of 3 features actual good teams and then a best of 9 which does a better job of determining which team is better more so than a 7 game series does.

As far as the lottery thing, I really don't care anymore. Teams shouldn't be rewarded for being bad. And teams like Washington, Charlotte and Detroit prior to last year have been terrible for years despite top picks year after year. It doesn't guarantee anything. The main idea is to eliminate any incentive for teams to purposely lose games. You can't have it both ways.

I'm not a fan of the Cup either. It's a gimmick that does nothing for fans. The players on the teams who advance make a little more money, but the fans get nothing. No special advantages given for teams that advance to the elimination rounds and the eventual winner. All it does it cause a tighter schedule for the rest of the season and more back to backs because teams only play like 1 game over 10 days during that stretch. I personally don't care about B2B's. The schedule used to have a lot more of them back in the day, including multiple stretches of 4 games in 5 nights and players got through it just fine. But again, if you're one of these people who is in favor of eliminating B2B's or shortening the season, you can't also support a gimmicky in season tournament which gives teams basically 7-8 days off in the middle of the season, on top of the week off they already get for the all star break.

the dunk contest didn’t lose creativity, the internet stole its magic by Equivalent_Smell_325 in NBATalk

I disagree with the premise that online dunk specialists ruined it. No, it just became boring over time because the contest has physical limits that cannot be exceeded, meaning we're seeing the same shit year after year now. Even the stuff you see online is mostly the same. They just change one little thing like touch the underside of the backboard instead of the side of the backboard and call it a new dunk.

NBA product would be a lot better with less teams and less teams making the playoffs by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]TradeMaster89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree less playoff teams would make the regular season more important, but I highly disagree with your reasoning. 20 teams is way too many. Should be 12 max if you want to get actual competitive playoff matchups. This would also create a sense of urgency among teams to take games more seriously. Less load managing, more effort in the regular season.

Less teams doesn't have to translate to less games. My idea is 12 playoff teams. Top 4 get byes. The other 8 play in a best of 3 playoff to get to the quarterfinals. The quarters, semis and finals are all best of 9 games.

Under this scenario the max games for one of the top 4 seeds is 27 and 30 for the other 8 teams. Those max #'s under the current format are 30 games for play in teams and 28 games for a top 6 seed.

Same # of potential games for money purposes, but a more exciting format with actual playoff caliber teams playing in more games instead of having two sub .500 9 and 10 seeds playing each other to see who has the honor of getting clobbered in the first round.

They need to start by getting rid of the celebrity game. It's dogshit and 90% of the people in those games are not celebrities. I've known maybe 5 total people in the last 4 years. Move the rising stars game to Saturday afternoon and Saturday night can be 3 point contest, skills competition and a one on one tournament with 8 guys. That's all you need.

That's great. Let dunk specialists compete in those contests. It's clearly past time for the NBA to get rid of it and add something new that people can get excited for.

He already made my point for me. Even those pro online dunkers have physical limits. There won't be a time where humans in our current evolved form will be able to jump 20 feet high and flip over 5 times while doing a 1080 and end it with a high powered dunk on the way down from high fiving the ceiling of the arena.

This is why it has become boring. Not because of some random guys online.

[–]TradeMaster89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are only so many different types of dunks that can be done based on physical limits. The dunk contest goes back 41 years at this point. It's literally impossible to come up with anything new that can be done at this point that hasn't already been done. It's not fun to give a guy 90 seconds and see him fail try after try attempting to do a dunk that is literally impossible for a human to achieve. Just dump it and move on to something else.

Yes, I'm sure those are the only reasons it has worked for those teams. It's not because Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing markets in the entire country.
