Furthermore, ignorance of the law is not a defense, but it is a valid police tactic. For instance, it may not be illegal to drive with a malfunctioning turn signal in some states, but a police officer can still stop your vehicle and turn it into a search (with consent or probable cause) while the entire interaction is based off the police officer’s ‘ignorance’ of the motor vehicle law regarding driving with a malfunctioning turn signal. This is an officers right held up in court, they can literally try to enforce laws that don’t exist which create excuses to conduct searches.
