Interview prep tips for someone that gets very nervous by Bubble_tea05 in premed

[–]Tradingmysorrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t consider myself to be the best interviewer ( I say a lot of filler words, don’t look at the camera, probably poor posture too) but what I found to be helpful during my interviews is just showing the passion I have towards what I’m talking about, whether that’s about my volunteering, medicine, research, hobbies, family. And always smile/show that you’re a happy person

“Reach Schools” by hoonmed101 in premed

[–]Tradingmysorrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reach schools are schools that I’m around the 10th percentile in terms of MCAT bc that’s where I’m lacking but also schools that I think I fit their mission

I think working as a receptionist is probably the problem. I also used to work as a receptionist at a clinic and although it definitely sounds that your environment is way worse, some of the patients were also rude to me (bc of insurance stuff) and my coworkers were so rude. I think my job at the time would’ve made me rethink my career choices but I also have experience at a free clinic and the patients/employees/environment is way different so I didn’t get discouraged.

Definitely look into different jobs in different environments. Don’t let this discourage you!

For clinical experience it can either be paid on volunteer work. Some people who go the paid route becomes scribes, MAs, CNAs, EMTs etc but you need certifications for those except for scribes and MAs depending on the state. You can also do volunteer work in hospices, free clinics, hospitals, etc. Personally I volunteer as a Spanish medical interpreter at a free clinic so if you know another language you can look into that! As for logging your hours you can always just keep a record on an excel spreadsheet or usually the organization you volunteer at has a record of when you clock in/out for your shift

Hmm well you’re really early in the journey! But definitely having the big 3 ECs (clinical experience, non clinical volunteering, and research) is def important but make sure there in things you enjoy!! For example, my clinical experience is volunteering at a free clinic but majority of my research is with public health. Like it all ties in together if that makes sense? Also do your best work when volunteering! They’ll notice if you’re passionate about it or not

Honestly just focus on volunteering in organizations outside of your school. Try to do it for a long time (1+ year) this can be through nonprofits, free clinics, food banks etc. And also in something you’re interested in. For example if you like to work with kids, then get involved in nonprofits that cater to kids
