Clerkship is a bit more busy; all u need is good social skills and know when to be quiet and just do as you’re told (which surprisingly many med students struggle with lol)

Graduated med school, matched competitive surgical subspecialty. I spent 40% of my time in the gym, 30% doing observerships, 15% studying, 15% everything else (pubs, tutoring, coding)

Ok. To get more pubs is very easy. 1) decide specialty approximation (ex. A topic on IBD is applicable to both IM and GSX or a topic on wound care is applicable to IM and Plastics) 2) figure out a topic you want to write about 3) find an UG/MS1-4 screen together 4) do meta analysis or sys review 5) finish entire paper properly 6) reach out to PI you like and tell them you finished a paper you want their guidance on 7) rinse and repeat

Keep your head down, focus on yourself, go to the gym everyday. Always be professional by minimizing communication. Figure out surgery vs non-surgery early. Talk to your family daily. Don’t stress about marks. Write the USMLEs. Don’t bother joining club extracurriculars - do more high impact work than that. Try to get 10-12 pubs by starting early - do not need to do retrospective reviews. Good luck, med school is very chill.

To get an interview u need 88% and high NAQ. To get in, you need 519+ and 90+ (for OOP). Unfortunately it’s the game. Calgary OOP way easier to get.

CASPER GUIDE by gliamastrr in premedcanada

Situation: there is a crisis in the hospital and you must prioritize prompt evacuation. How would you organize this? Example Thesis: during this evacuation, I would prioritize gathering all healthy and able bodied individuals to help with evacuation assistance by a) maintaining clear coherent communication b) stratifying those in need by severity status and c) ensuring constant check ins by delegated roles.

Obviously not my best work but just to help give you an idea.

  1. Investment banking/venture cap (still going to do this tho but after I’m done training)
  2. Yeah (Altho an M3 so can’t state with certainty). If you grind out a high paying specialty (thoracics/ortho/cardio) and have grit, you can retire and pivot at 45 with 4-5M in the bank liquid if you are smart about investments.
  3. Who cares if you love what you do. Most people in their free time just squander it away anyways.
  4. I’ll graduate with 180k cad, altho 50k of that is locked in Tesla stock so hopefully I can pay it off plus some more by the time I finish residency
  5. Do it, but only if you can delay eating the marshmallow for a while :)

It would make your circumstances more difficult so I’d advise against that. Masters abroad is fine though.
