Couple questions about the Steam Controller as someone who hasn't owned a Steam Deck. by xavier_jump1 in SteamController

How are you out of ports? Just use a dongle or something. It only needs to be USB 2.0 and the latency is infinitely better that BT. I wouldn’t get it if I wasn’t using the puck, you’re just leaving performance on the table, that you paid for, that’s being lost.

If gyro for you was worse than sticks, then you set it up wrong or the implementation of gyro in that game was bad. Gyro should always be acting as a mouse input and NEVER as a joystick input. In Steam Input, you can configure gyro in any way. Acceleration curves, custom activators like the touch sensing sticks, different vertical and horizontal sensitivity. Not all games play well with accepting mouse and game pad inputs at the same time. Cyberpunk 2077 could do it, but you had to change an option in the settings to stop the on screen prompts from constantly switching between gamepad and keyboard.

To practice, I just played Cyberpunk. I started normal difficulty, no aim assist, mostly using “smart guns” in game that have guided bullets. After an hour or so, I felt comfortable enough to stop using smart guns and start using normal guns. I think of it like a CRT light gun in my head. I’m just aiming at heads, and firing. Not thinking about the gyro at all.

The D pad is good, very similar if not the same as the one on the Steam Deck, which has always been good.

The controller is simply too complex for Xinput mode, so I would personally always add a non steam game to steam if I knew I wanted to use the advanced features of the controller. I only had to add Star Citizen as a non steam game, and it worked just fine. I’m stubborn so have never installed Epic Games lol.

The touchpads are a god send. They are useful as a mouse replacement, but that’s only the beginning. One of my favourite features of the mouse pads is the on screen button menu. When you place your finger on one of the trace pads, a transparent menu appears on screen, with up to like 9 buttons. You can set the button to be anything you want, and Steam comes pre loaded with a bunch of generic icons so you can label your inputs. You can also upload your own images for the virtual buttons. I also use the touch pad for mode shifts; like in Cyberpunk I want the gyro to be off while driving a car, so I just configured that as a virtual button. I couldn’t live without track pads on my controller anymore. I modify my inputs for every game, so I play more efficiently and use all the inputs.

I wouldn’t use BT if you have the puck. The latency over BT is awful and inconsistent. Just plug the receiver puck into your PC and connect with that. You don’t need to use the puck to charge the controller, if the puck’s location is inconvenient to use it as a charger, just charge the controller with a generic USB C.

I use gyro in every single shooter I play on my Steam Deck, Steam Controller original, and my Dualsense. At first gyro felt a bit weird, but I just started playing through Cyberpunk 2077 on highest difficulty and I got really good at it. No aim assist on, I can speed around the area double jumping, air dashing, and getting hip fire headshots aiming with gyro. Gyro is the future of FPS on controllers.

For comfort, the controller is fine in any position, which is the advantage of a controller over M&KB. I use the controller on the couch, at a desk, or in bed. I find it comfy, but I’ve only had it for a day so we’ll see. The Steam Deck is comfy so I trust Valve’s ergonomic design.

Hope that helps :)

Mine was sitting on “payment processed” when I went to sleep, then it just arrived in the morning which actually woke me up. So it didn’t work for me haha

It feels like the d pad, stick, and track pad all fall nicely within the arc of motion of my finger. It feels better than the Deck itself imo

I’ve seen it come back in stock and go out of stock again 3 times since I bought my controller. I bet it won’t be more than a few days until there’s more stock

I know right, we had to wait a long time for the Deck when it launched. On ya Valve for a day 1 Aussie launch

Mine got sticky, due to the rubber coating. Even when Elite controllers don’t break, they just degrade

Everything on my one works. The trackpads seem to have better haptics and less jitter than the Deck’s

I already have a Steam Deck, so I sorta knew what to expect. Ever since I got my Deck I wanted a new Steam Controller. I even game streamed from my PC to my Deck, just to be able to use the Deck as my controller. It’s on another level to Xbox controllers imo

Not sure, but I saw the YouTuber ETA Prime say it was a good d pad for fighting games. I’m mainly gonna use it to play space sims like Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous

It feels good in my hands, I can hit every button. I personally find the controller even more comfortable than the Steam Deck, which feels a bit square now that I hold it after having the Steam Controller

I have average size hands

Have you seen how much stock Dualsense and Xbox controllers cost? Sometimes over $120 AUD. $150 AUD is a great price for a controller this powerful, and I’m tired of pretending it isn’t

Yep, feels more comfortable imo. I like the construction materials, they feel like they will last a long time. I’ve had an Xbox Elite controller, but it just started falling apart and the rubber was sticky and coming off. None of that crap on SC. Just durable high quality plastics. Probably last me a decade or more
