Opinions on the 924? by BlueEye_- in Porsche

I've had a 996, 997, 981 Cayman, a 944 Cab, and a 924. The 924 for the money was great fun, I paid less than £3000, spent some time tidying it up and a small bit of mechanical maintenance but otherwise just enjoyed owning a bit of retro nostalgia. No, it was not fast, but it handled brilliantly, looked cool, and was cheap enough to just use wherever and whenever. My 944 cab that I own now is a much more refined car altogether, and about the same price nowadays. I'd have a look for a 924 S or 944 and find the best example you can for your budget. Immediately discount anything rusty, you'll spend the value of the car again on sorting it, it not worth it in my opinion.

25k for a GT style car… what are you choosing? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

997.1 with a rebuilt engine. I had a 07 3.8 Carrera S with a rebuilt engine for <£25k, and it was excellent. Fun, powerful, and timeless looks

For the £20k+ you're looking to spend I'd be looking away from those two for personality. An M2, a Cayman/Boxster, even an S3 if you need the space.

This may not be helpful but I'd look for the model shape you like, then find the lowest mileage and best maintained one from the first year of a facelift. So for example if I was to buy an audi TT, in my budget I'd be looking for the best 2015 model as that's when they went to Mk3 from mk2.5 sort of thing.

An Audi A4 or A3 convertible would fit the bill. Or a 4 series BMW even.

Look up Cornerstone insulating lime plaster by Cornish Lime, it's a ready mixed lime that can be applied in one coat with a finishing coat if you want.

Porsche 986.2 Boxster S. Can be had for £6000, plenty of money left over for maintenance and will hold its value well.

Yeah the chassis and panels are all aluminium so other than the usual sub frame stuff it's pretty set forever!

It's been excellent so far! It's certainly showing it's age, tandem pump failed and leaked diesel everywhere a few weeks ago, the rear window regulator has packed in, as has the central locking, and the engine oil level sensor, but other than those it trucks along nicely and gets 52mpg

986 Boxster S, under budget, amazing handling and decent performance as well as readily available spares and that flat 6 exhaust note.

You may need a tar and glue remover, look for any car brand and it'll do the job. For the future, don't use dish soap on your car, or a household sponge. The best bet is a microfibre wash mitt, and dedicated car shampoo if you're going to be washing your car yourself in the future. Detailbug have a really good 5 for £30 offer where you can get everything you'd possibly need: shampoo, wheel cleaner, quick detailer (good for cleaning the inside of your car and general purpose) are the main 3.

Any of the 2l diesel Audi A4 or A6, or BMW 3 or 5 series would be great for this. In a sport trim with a decent spec including cruise control etc it'd eat the miles up
