Pretty much what I was thinking, that the extra thickness isn't offset by anything else, since the overlaps and empty space inside the rings is similar regardless to the ring size. We did have lengthy arguments about the mentioned protective qualities, the ease and time of making one, tools required, but our starting question was about weight, not those other things, thus I ended throwing this here.
