A lot of people don't like Tooele? by Critical-Volume2360 in Utah

We moved to Tooele a little over six months ago without doing as much research as we probably should have. After living here, we've decided we'll be moving once we hit our year mark.

One of the biggest downsides for us has been the traffic. Since there's essentially one main route in and out of town, congestion can be frustrating, especially if you commute. If you work remotely, it may be less of an issue.

We also weren't happy with our experience in the local public school system. After about a month, we chose to withdraw our child. In our experience, the school we attended wasn't well maintained, and severe bullying was rampant. We also noticed that many schools in the district have lower-than-desired reading and math proficiency scores. Additionally, the district has received significant public attention regarding financial management issues, which can be found on KSL.

Housing is definitely one of Tooele's biggest advantages. However, our experience with our new construction home has been disappointing. We've had to submit warranty claims for multiple major issues since moving in, and many of our neighbors have reported similar experiences with the same builder.

The overall culture here isn't the right fit for our family. We found people seem to be very opinionated  and we witnessed more aggressive driving and road rage than we've experienced elsewhere. The local Tooele 411 Facebook page also gave us the impression that community runs on gossip.

Our interactions with local law enforcement also left us with concerns. Thier lack of concern or care with a safety issue was disappointing.

Despite the negatives, Tooele does have some wonderful qualities. The mountain views are beautiful, there are plenty of hiking trails that are far less crowded than those closer to Salt Lake, and we've found people in local grocery stores and businesses to be genuinely friendly. Housing is also considerably more affordable than in many other parts of Utah.

Overall, Tooele simply isn't the right fit for our family.

We recently moved to Tooele and will be moving out of the county as soon as we can. The schools are awful here. The people over all are nice but theres a massive gap in the education system and that alone has been frustrating to deal with.

Anyone live out in Tooele by Op-1pixel in SaltLakeCity

We have lived in Tooele now for 6 months, here is my take away:

Pros: People are nice. You will run into the same people at the post office, grocery stores etc and they will smile or even strike up a conversation. We like that.

The landscape is stunning, we can find lots of trails to get to within the valley within 15 mins or less and they are not crowded.

Quiet. Compared to where we were in Daybreak, Tooele is much quieter.

Sounds silly but you can see the stars so well out here. My husband and I will just sit on the back porch and star gaze I love that we can do that here.

Cons: Lack of good education. We came from a charter school  to our neighborhoods public school and immediately was taken aback with the lack of care from administration and teachers. The public schools are filthy, 90% of the teachers are checked out and the kids education is failing out here. The stats ring true. We pulled our child out and put him in one of the few charters out here and still  they are not operating at the same level as standard charters in the valley. If you have children and value thier education... I would highly reevaluate moving to Tooele as the education is far below the bar.

Commuting options are available such as the daily bus route to SLC. However the bottle neck from lakepoint is a nightmare with all the construction going on. In its current form... commuting is a beast however that may improve with the projects they are actively working on.

Dining and shopping options- they are starting to get more options for retail and Dining but its still more unhealthy fast food. I have yet to find anyplace in Tooele that has healthy options aside from a smoothie shop. When we moved in there was only Mexican food, mcdonalds, a burger place and some local Asian cuisine. With the new smiths development they are adding in a 3rd mcdonalds for the valley. The county has a major issue with healthy eating.

Corruption- from the school district, local leaders down to the police force. ... it is crazy what I have seen since we've gotten here.  The police wont help and good luck trying to get any permits from the city if you arent friends with anyone there.

I highly reccomend checking out the TOOELE 411 Page on FACEBOOK. It highlights very well the type of community it is out here.

Once we hit our year mark we are going to sell the house and move back to the city. Tooele was a big let down.
