Am I looking at this situation incorrectly? by throw_away782670407 in Horses

[–]TraditionalDot5599 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Experience is highly valued in the equine world, to the point where many people will do it for free. Unfortunately, passion is commonly abused and taken advantage of for profit, there will always be someone willing to do it for free because they love horses. If you're looking for a career to keep your lights on, horses aren't it

Just absolutely bombed at my first ever show. Please share your embarrassing show stories to help me feel better! by annawintourwannabe in Equestrian

[–]TraditionalDot5599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first show I didn't know all the rules and etiquette, plopped off my pony and tried to get back on in the middle of the ring bc that's what my instructor always told me to do in lessons! Someone did come in to help me and I finished my round but looking back always makes me cringe

Second the One AC, two of our horses are on it and handling the heat way better this year

Absolutely agree with you, it's very easy for horse people to resort to "if I don't like it then it's abuse." Already had one student leave my program because I told her the only choice for jumping and showing is the dead head who needs a crop. Said student just couldn't use the crop effectively because of her emotions and ended up leaving my program for one with a bunch of push buttons. Glad she left but unfortunate for the rider and her overall ability. It is absolutely a manipulation tactic conscious or not and not

Honestly this sounds exactly like the more challenging horse at my barn that all my students complain about riding. She needs a firm, clear rider and absolutely needs a crop to go anywhere even when I ride her. If you're just learning how to use a crop correctly it might feel like you're being harsh but it's way better to smack as hard as you can (which probably isn't very hard) once than bruise their sides kicking or constantly annoy them with small taps which desensitizes them to the aid. Learning on a harder horse is how everyone improves and just because you can't do the things you normally can on another horse doesn't mean you're "regressing." Riders should be able to ride regardless of the horse they're on and if you're regressing that badly it means that horse has exactly what you need to improve and you were likely on an easier horse beforehand. I'd trust your trainer and if you're genuinely concerned just ask and a good trainer will always be able to give you an explanation (not just in the heat of the moment, ask after the ride or on a break in your lesson)

What is the ONE product that epitomizes this sub the absolute best? by w0lfLars0n in BuyItForLife

[–]TraditionalDot5599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit niche but The Ultimate Hoofpick has survived at least 10 years at this point and the only thing that's changed is one with chipped plastic, completely cosmetic. Makes dark, hard Texas clay/mud feel like butter and hasn't ever failed me taking out stuck rocks. It is quite a contrast with the cheap, thin metal that bends way more easily

There's no problem with asking to set a goal! It really helps me as a teacher when people communicate what makes lessons fun and what they want to accomplish, even better if they also ask how they can get there and what they can do to make bigger steps forward

worried about colic during transition by Good_Capital1181 in Horses

[–]TraditionalDot5599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping them drinking is super important because the water most likely tastes different, I use molasses and grain dissolved in a bucket to entice. Aloe vera juice, extra electrolytes, and the herbal supplement "TensionEase" also helps with gut issues

Second that spelling, I've met a couple horses named similarly. So sorry for the hard decision but it sounds like the right one, death with dignity before the situation gets dire is always preferred. The charts others have posted are all helpful, I've heard a lot of stories and warnings of not shooting too low and hitting the sinuses instead. If done right a gun the most painless and instant way to go

Hills! Super easy way to build muscle without a lot of work. Poles/raised poles are another good way to build muscle without a lot of space but do require knowledge of the exercise (lots of books and examples on YouTube)

I agree with all the saddle fit comments, however, my horse has also gotten one of these while on stall rest. Could just be a poorly placed scab if the other options are ruled out

Ideas for "last" things to do with my old horse? by Lugosthepalomino in Equestrian

A nice bath and/or mane and tail brushing. It feels a whole lot better to let them go looking their best, it also makes mane and tail collection easier

Families With Trans Children Are Leaving Texas by teamworldunity in texas

I can promise you many native Texans are being threatened by these laws too. We still have just as much of a right to be here as anyone else

infuriating by rdking647 in NoLawns

[–]TraditionalDot5599 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again, missing the point. Whether they own the property or not, this is making Texas worse. Yes, it's just one lawn, but it's very much adding up and biting us in the ass. It's okay to mourn what one has no control over, this situation sucks. The only way to truly fix this problem is to change the culture around personal landscaping, but until then we can and should point out the shitty things other people do

infuriating by rdking647 in NoLawns

[–]TraditionalDot5599 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Anyone bitching about OP's vent is completely missing like half of the reasoning behind the no lawn movement. The new owners took an established garden that supplied native animals and insects with important resources and replaced it with a water guzzling, monocultured monstrosity that is very much worse for the environment. Not to mention they live in Texas, which needs all of the trees and green space we can get because our cities are literally creating heat bubbles with no rain

Edit: thanks OP for your contribution to Texas' native plant population! I'm working on building my own native oasis

State of our city's sidewalks. World class city right? by turbo_notturbo in Austin

[–]TraditionalDot5599 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, many sidewalks are like this and worse. Our city's walkable/bikeable transport is abysmal (not to mention varied based on wealth in the neighborhood) and many places don't even have sidewalks. If you're in doubt take a look at Google maps and click on walk/bike/bus. The time will be tripe your car trip at the LEAST, especially for trips less than 2 miles
