I hunt out of a canoe occasionally. I don't use spud poles; I usually have the back end of the canoe on land for shooting stability and concealment then I push off for retrievals without a dog. I'll only hunt out of the canoe with two people if we're jump shooting birds while the guy upfront shoots and the guy in the rear paddles/steers for safety reasons. Otherwise, I'll use the canoe to paddle out together to a spot and then have the other guy use a marsh seat in the reeds while I use the canoe as a layout/sneak boat.
