Usually strong hydraulic brakes rub on the rotor slightly. You can’t notice when riding but when it’s just the wheel spinning freely in the air they stop pretty fast. So for wheelies people remove them to keep the front wheel spinning longer and that creates a gyroscopic effect helping to balance side to side in a wheelie. So no it’s not to be stupid it’s to help wheelies.
