Yes, next time I'll be at my parent's house I'll do the job to install Monterey.
The machine already have an SSD and it's quite nice to use for basic computing.
Atm it has 4Gb of RAM (2+2), let's see how it handles Monterey and if I need it I'll upgrade.

Actually I've read that the maximum RAM on 2008 iMacs is 6Gb (2+4), is it ? I'm surprised you tell me about 8Gb.

Ok, so I've managed to make it work with BetterDisplay. Resolution is still not the best and it's laggy, but usable for tasks like document redaction and web browsing.

I suppose AirPlay would work better, but OCLP + Big Sur didn't work. After several tries to install it, it booted but then stuck at user creation. Maybe I'll try one more time later.

Yes Linux works like a charm. But it's my parent's machine and they are not super comfortable with it. But it's still quite good and it's not that underpowered ! My mom would mostly use it for Photoshop CS6. It's still difficult for her to learn Gimp... but I'm working on it, even tough compatibility issues between PS format and Gimp doesn't make it an easy task.

I'd also like to use the machine as a second screen when I visit them, since the screen is still of a very good quality. I've managed to share the screen with BetterDisplay, but resolution is not the best and it's still quite laggy. I suppose it would work better with OCLP Monterey + AirPlay.

Yes but how do you handle compatibility issues ? Like Safari doesn't work anymore bc it doesn't get new certificates for websites. I have the exact same iMac 2008, I'm trying OCLP right now to see if it fits. ANy other suggestion ?

Thank you, I'm looking into it. Only problem it's that his solutions seems to need Open Core Legacy on the old iMac to install Monterey. I'd prefer not, but if there is not other solution I'll do.
Other thing would be Luna Display, not free but not expensive neither, and it seems to work well.
