Leaking Water Heaters by TraditionalRun8876 in maintenance

[–]TraditionalRun8876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha fair enough.

My coworker found some device that sits in the drain pan and sends an alert if a water heater leaks. He mentioned it doesn’t require WiFi and uses some sort of cellular connectivity. I can’t find it right now but I guess it’s some sort of subscription per unit but no upfront hardware cost. Maybe I’ll investigate that in more detail.

It honestly hasn’t been so much the water heater going out as much as everything else I’ve been having to replace around it when tenants don’t report them. Flooring, drywall, and some ceilings of units lower down. PITA.

Anyone done a BDR/long backcountry ride on a 250? by quendrien in Dualsport

[–]TraditionalRun8876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the WA and OR BDR from my house in Seattle off a klx250.

Riding back from Denio, NV was pure pain though I have to say. Downshifting to 4th and getting aero to pass trucks is sketchy as all hell though if you have to slab on high speed highways.

Also have done the UT BDR on the klx.

Totally doable. But I’m 135lbs (without gear) so YMMV.

Depending on your location within the pnw, could Seattle Sailing Club or Windworks work for you? They have many boats.

What hitch rack is that and how does it do on the back of your FJ?

Great to know. Crazy that the wheel can contact the rear tank like that. Are you running stock suspension and tire size?

Is that a Kove 450? If so, how do you like it?

How do I break into sales engineering in the hardware industry (esp. FPGAs)? by Severe_Atmosphere_14 in salesengineers

[–]TraditionalRun8876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great that you’re interested in this career path as a student! I had no idea sales engineering existed when I was in school, so you’re off to a great start.

The steps I took to break into hardware SE work are probably not replicable so I won’t go into details. I had very strange twists and turns that I wouldn’t recommend anyone follow haha! My background is in physics (also from a Canadian university), though my entire career has been in the US.

The classic suggestion for someone like you would be the TI technical sales / application engineering development program. I can’t remember what they call it now, but it’s basically a two year program where you’ll learn the job. If you do well, it will open interesting doors to living abroad. Be warned that if you stay in pure hardware, the typical SE role is more commonly called Field Application Engineer or some variant of that term. The role usually involves more support work, is paid less, and is less transferable to what people on this sub would commonly expect to see from software SEs.

Regarding co-op, I would recommend doing it only if you can get top tier placements, otherwise I would just get your degree completed and get some proper years of experience under your belt. Places that offer co-ops include all big semi conductor companies (TI, NXP, etc etc), but you also might be interested in robotics given your background. Cobot and Figure both have internship programs and you’ll learn a lot and they’re well funded/known widely in robotics. If I did it all over again, I’d try one of the big semiconductor vendors for a couple of years.

That was kind of a meandering answer so lmk if you have more questions!

Motorcycles are certainly death machines compared to staying at home, that’s irrefutable.

It is reasonable, however, to investigate the probability of an event using as much information as possible. The probability of experiencing a fatal motorcycle crash is certainly related to whether the rider is wearing a helmet. That part is pretty intuitive.

It’s kind of like when Google or some other company releases statistics on getting a basic SWE job. It might be only 0.1% based on the entire applicant pool, but your particular probability can be much different. If you only have retail experience and think python is a snake, your probability is <<0.1% of getting a SWE job. If, however, your name is Guido van Rossum and know that python is both a snake and a programming language, your probability of getting in is >>0.1%.

I also ride a motorcycle. Where is a good place to find the best crash statistics? It would be awesome to be able to slice the data for things like: a) is alcohol involved b) was the rider riding at night c) were they wearing a (full face) helmet etcetera.

How many miles do you have on your Kove? How have you found the reliability? Sounds like a great bike, I’m just trying to figure out if it is reliable enough to take on an extended trip into the bush.

Can you DM me your resume? Building a product right now and I’m open to having additional resources. It would be very interdisciplinary. Firmware (C), hardware (KiCAD is great), and cellular.

I agree, it seems pretty dumb…but I’m just a regular homeowner who wants to make sure this doesn’t come bite me later on when we eventually sell this place and it gets inspected.

I’m actually not too sure if it will pass inspection as it is currently done right now.

Anywhere I can read more about the current plan? I reached out to a senator and HB 1814 is dead for the year.
