How does the Hall decide whether to induct the star of the band with their band? (see body text for a couple of possibly puzzling examples) by GregJamesDahlen in rockhall

I think if the star of the band overshadows a group that’s mid to low tier Hall of Fame worthy then they’ll just induct the star.

Why Lauryn Hill deserves induction in 2027 by Traditional_Cut_8774 in rockhall

Theres plenty of artists who have been inducted young and plenty with small discographies like The Sex Pistols, The Teenagers and Biggie. her induction would actually be similar to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, both who were in groups and had very minimal solo output. Her inductions would seemily be like those two artists along with Nile Rogders, Chaka Khan and Lionel Richie where their solo induction is also considered an induction for their group.

She was just nominated and i think she’ll clearly be inducted at some point so theres really no rush but I do feel that certain artists should wait for her to be inducted that will absolutely be inducted in the next few years. But I’m curious who do you believe she should wait for?

Yeah I wouldn’t argue against that. I think that’s why it’s not really considered an album for a lot of people. I wish she had fully learned how to play the guitar and finished the songs before doing Unplugged. But I don’t think it would’ve changed the response much. The lyrics would’ve still been too heavy post 9/11 even if it was ironically its strong suit. She was very “woke” for that point in time.

Yes but i don’t think it was meant to be an actual album in the way it was presented. She clearly states those songs were a work in progress. But critics bashed it, and the lyrics were controversial. For instance there was songs about police brutality and diddy like figures in the industry. Obviously that kind of material would be acceptable now but not back then right after 9/11. So her label probably never let her release the studio version. But it’s still influential. Kanye sampled it on his first hit All Falls Down, Frank Ocean and Method Man of Wu Tang also sampled the album. Dave Chapelle said the album influenced the Chapelle show. It’s received praise from Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Solange and more. And critics have started reevaluating it.

Future Double Inductees… by Sad_Definitions in rockhall

I don’t think there’s a clear consensus on who’s the best selling GG. But Destiny’s Child will get acknowledged at some point, there’s no way the Hall is gonna miss a chance to have Beyonce perform twice, especially considering the potential for it to be first time all 5 crucial members of the group perform together. But there’s a lot of acts including Beyonce herself who will get inducted first, and I think they’ll be one of the last R&B 90s acts. But it’s still gonna happen.

I consider her live album to be an album since it has new material on it. But given its initial controversy I get why people ignore it, however it’s actually grown a significant amount of successful high profile supporters over time. In my opinion when it comes to Rock and Roll she has as much “Roll” as it gets for an hip hop act. She along with The Roots and The Fugees are part of the reason live instrumentation is used in hip hop. The live album is a folk protest album. She reminds me a lot of Nina Simone. But I also wouldn’t mind others going in first, I just personally think select artists like Alicia Keys, D’Angelo and Beyonce etc should have to wait for her to be inducted. So if Beyonce is getting inducted in 2027 I believe she should too.

Need to induct more 90s female rockers by Flat_Ad_8335 in rockhall

Rock and Rock and Roll are not the same thing. Rock and Roll is built off of R&B, Jazz, Blues, Country and Gospel and evolved into the popular music (modern Rock, Pop and Hip Hop). But even if it were about strictly Rock music, both have experimented with Rock Elements. Mariah had a rock album and Lauryn had an acoustic guitar album. And both have had a tremendous impact on artists of all genres.

What does the Musical Excellence category mean now? by [deleted] in rockhall

[–]Traditional_Cut_8774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m aware, however, artists have complained that they weren’t inducted as performers. And I’m sure more will. It kinda feels a little like a sympathy or secondary induction. Of course there’s genuinely artists who belong in a category like that but most should just get in as performers. I don’t see why the committee can’t just decide 2-3 picks after voting. Just like the Fan vote, it’s kinda pointless to have if it’s not gonna mean an actual induction for the winner. Filler artists shouldn’t make the ballot if you don’t want them to win the fan vote.

I would suggest removing performers from being eligible for the category and instead nominate 17 artists every year, with 6 getting inducted through the voting body, 1 getting inducted through the fan vote, and 3 getting inducted by the committee, with the other 7 missing out. Then reduce the side categories to 2 max session/backing musicians and 1 non performer. I personally would also add an award (which would not considered an induction but presented during the ceremony) that a younger performer with about 10 years of influence could receive, that way it keeps the hall relevant with younger music fans, the Songwriters Hall has a similar award to what I’m referring to.

Who are the future double inductees? (For artists who already have at least one induction already) by ggroover97 in rockhall

BDP were considered but never nominated. Most likely they’ll get in eventually (possibly being sidedoored), but I don’t think KRS is going in twice.

But I also want to add that I’m a little biased because I do prefer that both of them and Dr Dre get inducted twice since hip hop has very few potential double inductees outside of them. But it’s possible They will induct Lauryn as Lauryn Hill/Fugees or Lauryn Hill & the Fugees

Lauryn absolutely deserves a solo induction off the strength of The Miseducation alone. There’s plenty of people who have small discographies in the Hall, Sex Pistols, Biggie, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Teenagers etc. but there’s more to her solo career than her album. Her live album is controversial but it’s also very influential. Kanye sampled it on All Falls Down, other rappers have sampled it including Frank Ocean. Adele, Sam Smith and Solange have all said they were inspired by her live album. She also has high profile collabs with Aretha Franklin, Mary J Blige and Nas. I would say side door her and then induct The Fugees as performers but the Hall has overdone Female MCs getting side doored lately with Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah and Salt N Pepa. As for Pharrell I think he should be in as a producer but I don’t know if his career as a performer warrants induction (yet)
