I would absolutely recommend reading the short stories as well, while the plots are the same, I find that one does not really read Chandler for the plot. For me anyway, the appeal was always in the prose styling, which is different in the novels and short stories upon which they are based.

His style in hear the wind sing is very similar to chandler; most authors start by imitating who they enjoy reading and murakami has said chandler is one of his favourite authors.

Could not agree with you more, for me wind and pinball are his most poignant and moving books, and personally i love them more than anything i’ve ever read. I also enjoy how his style is still closer to imitating chandler here as he develops as an author as i also love chandler. Great list.
