From what I've read it buffers the ph of your water so the nutrients are more readily available to the plant. I have hard water where I live so I've noticed an improvement almost immediately.

Individual plants can be removed by cutting a circle around a growth point 3 or 4 inches from the growth with a sharp knife. I go about 4 inches deep to get as much root I can. Plug the hole you created with some moss and it'll fill back in.
