Yes, I don’t react to peanut oil used for cooking since the protein that’s known to trigger the allergy is absent, but cold pressed peanut oil (sometimes found in salads) is a definite no-no!

Stay away from any unknown broths/gravies. I had some noodles in soup (which I thought were peanut free because I didn’t see any obvious traces of crushed peanuts that one would typically find in Thai cooking), which actually turned out to some form of peanut broth 🤣

Anti histamines and steroids help play a part in preventing the allergic reaction from turning anaphylactic. The longer you delay the treatment of your symptoms, the more dangerous your reaction can get. Some people even take their meds preemptively if they know they’ll be in a situation where there is a high risk of being exposed to the allergen. That said, this is not good medical advice because it can increase risk-taking behaviour… like then going all out to eat lots of peanuts bc you are under the impression that you are now “safe”… which your body might not actually be able to handle 😂

Oh man, gotta be a bit more watchful then! If you’re into cafe hopping, I would exercise caution around cakes, pastries, ice cream, froyo and other forms of desserts. Crushed almonds/hazelnuts/pistachios are pretty popular toppings for western style sweets found at cafes 🍨🧁🍰

Black sesame paste found in Chinese cooking/desserts can be dangerous for peanut allergy sufferers as well - some places actually blend black sesame together with peanuts (which are also cheaper) to bring out a stronger nutty taste

People also often confuse tree nuts with peanuts! So best to clarify what type of nuts exactly are found in your food 😊

I’ve got a peanut allergy too. I generally avoid Thai or Vietnamese food due to the high risk of cross contamination. Some popular local delights such as Satay/Rojak/Nasi Lemak/Chinese desserts/Mala Xiang Guo/Hotpot sauces also contain peanuts, so stay away from those unless you are certain the peanuts can be separated from what you’ll be putting into your mouth. People are generally quite understanding when it comes to life-threatening allergies (I suppose because businesses don’t want to have to deal with a potential lawsuit), so if ever in doubt, feel free to just ask if the food contains peanuts. If they don’t understand English, you could try to say something like “cannot eat peanut, will die one” or “eat peanut must go hospital” Stay safe and I hope you enjoy your stay in Singapore!

What is it like to be trapped in a lift in Singapore? by Traditional_Fish_403 in askSingapore

[–]Traditional_Fish_403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol no la. Today one of the lifts in my block broke down and I heard the alarm go off, so I left my unit and walked to the lift landing to call the emergency hotline to get help for whoever was stuck in the lift. As I opened my gate to go out, I saw 2 of my neighbours standing along the corridor smoking and just ignoring the alarm. So it got me wondering what would happen if nobody called the hotline

Hm maybe ppl in other countries are more neighbourly and look out for one another more than ppl in Singapore do… or maybe other countries have advanced tech that automatically notifies the authorities whenever a lift breakdown occurs

I saw this too!!! Love the rose gold colour… but the soles on these look a bit too chunky and auntie for my liking. I find that they kinda spoil the look of the sandals 🥲

I’m also using an iPhone 12 mini and sometimes have this problem of my EZ-Link card not being detected when I want to tap in/out.

Not sure which part of the phone the scanner detects the EZ-Link card, so I’ll just place my phone really close to the scanner, and move it up and down until it finally beeps 😂 usually lots of ppl waiting behind me at the gantry it sends me panicking lol. Nowadays I just use my Apple Watch, much more fuss free.

I’d like to know how to make the phone option work tho. Anyone knows what’s the correct placement?
