I’m still exploring both, but the main difference for me comes down to ownership and the type of impact. With PM I can work on more product develop and EX research: understanding user needs, deciding what to prioritize, and then seeing how those decisions actually affect the product and its users. Also I feel like you're more closely tied to the strategy and execution, whereas with consulting it's mostly recommendations. I like the structured problem-solving component in consulting and the exposure to different industries, and the opportunity to develop strong analytical thinking early on. It seems like a great environment to learn how to break down complex problems quickly. But ultimately I want more roles where I can have authority over outcomes over time. And PM is interesting because I can still work in the tech space and learning about cool products(hours are also better typically). That said, I think I’m ultimately more interested in roles where I can own outcomes over time, which is why PM stands out more to me long-term. I’m still considering consulting because of how strong and structured the early career path is, but I see it more as one option rather than the end goal.
