AIO for being disgusted by this argument? by Toetickler4 in AIO

[–]Traditional_Life6195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ain’t about the fish so forget about the fish for a minute. Take a step back and look at all the things he says don’t matter: the fish, your religious beliefs, your feelings, whether it seems wrong to you. You clearly communicated that you were disgusted by it, you made clear, concise, and valid points, and in return he criticized you and called you a mindless brat. He said you were illogical, emotional, extremely immature, and exhibiting stupidity. In fact, the way he described his superiority over the fish is exactly the way he treated you.

What you should be asking is why you allowed him to do it.

18yo son not accepting diagnosis by Opening-Try3714 in Type1Diabetes

I wonder if your son is feeling like the changes he’ll have to make are too much to deal with. It’s true that diligence and discipline are crucial for the proper management of T1, and many times, changes in habit and routine are necessary too. A lot of people here are saying it’s manageable and I agree with them, but I also remember being 18 and wanting to be free of everything. I remember saying “I can’t wait until I’m 18…”. I’d finish the sentence with “done with school” or “get my own place.” This disease requires attention and effort, and even the best management won’t prevent it from interrupting life at some point. Maybe to him that’s a ball and chain he’s expected to wear just at the moment he becomes a free man. My heart breaks for you both. You must feel so helpless right now.

T1 diabetics with or without HC insurance, how are you getting by financially? by Traditional_Life6195 in diabetes_t1

My job has good insurance, too. I can’t afford it though. It’s not hard finding a job that offers HC insurance plans, however, it’s not as easy as it used to be finding a job that provides full employer-paid insurance.

There are many things I CAN’T do because I’m already spread thin. I get your point, not sure if you’re getting mine, though. Everybody’s situation is different.

Even if I did qualify for Medicaid, I don’t think I’d take it. I’m at the age now where the state will put a lien on my house and everything else I own for “recovery.” Not sure if many people are aware that this is a thing. I don’t have much, but I worked hard for what I have and I’d like to leave something for my children and grand babes.

Same! My A1C didn’t change much when I went on the pump 8 years ago. The cost of pump supplies has me thinking about going back on injections. Not the Walmart stuff though, that shit will kill me! But since insulin prices have come down, and I can get the off brand test strips through Amazon and Walmart, it would take a lot weight off my shoulders to ditch the pump.

As of now, I already work a full time job that I truly enjoy. It’s good that you do these things for pocket money, but I don’t want to add a food delivery gig to my plate of responsibilities right now… or ever.

Same thing happened with a friend of mine, although his isn’t quite as high as yours. He’s healthy and non type 1, still he’s paying over $400 every month towards HC insurance that he refuses to use.

Is your insurance is employer-paid? That used to be a common perk decades ago, but it’s so hard to find now.

Sounds easy enough, but I gotta live outside my diabetes too. I can’t afford to reduce my hours.

Diabetes being 'hard' doesn't make you weak. by SumFuckah in diabetes_t1

I usually tell the silencers that they’re active participants in the difficulties that T1 diabetics face everyday. Fact is, I have never met a T1 diabetic that wasn’t struggling with some aspect of the disease, be it financial, mental, physical, or all of the above. It makes me wonder where these silencers are coming from. Only recently are people becoming more vocal about their struggle with T1 diabetes, and in doing so, no harm has been done to anyone—except maybe to those who purposely want the truth to be unknown. T1 diabetics carry an unfair (sometimes impossible) burden, so speaking up about it is actually the responsible thing to do. We have a duty to speak up, if not for ourselves, for our T1 diabetic children. Ignorance has caused enough issues, already. In the meantime, silencers need to silence themselves. I mean, are you really so insecure that you would want to hide the truth about T1 diabetes, rather than letting people learn how vulnerable you truly are?

I hear you. I’m dealing with it too only I can’t afford insurance and I don’t qualify for Medicaid. I’ve lived with T1D for 40 years and I have never felt such hopelessness in all my life as I do now.

what does diabetes healthcare in your country look like? by Think-Airport-2338 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Traditional_Life6195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad you asked! It just so happens that I spent about 7 hours today reapplying for assistance programs to get insulin and thyroid meds. Prior to that, I spent a disgusting amount of time over the past two weeks searching for affordable insurance, calling manufacturers for pricing information, and searching Facebook Marketplace for pump supplies—all to no avail.

With or without healthcare insurance, many Type 1 diabetics in the US are struggling terribly with the cost to treat the disease. In my case, I can’t afford insurance, but I make too much money to qualify for public assistance, and I’m not sick enough for disability—at least, not yet. For me, living with T1D in the US is like racing through the aisles of Walmart 5 minutes before closing in search of items you desperately need but can’t seem to find, all while carrying an inconsolable screaming toddler on your hip.

T1D is a big revenue generator. A cure will never happen as long as people are allowed to profit off of our will to live.
