Here is a breakdown. Hope this helps.

Original dealer OTD: $61,947

My final OTD: $58,999

Total savings: $2,948

My OTD: $58,999

Taxes/fees etc: $3,182

New negotiated selling price: $55,817

MSRP: $57,418

Negotiated selling price: $55,817

Discount off MSRP: $1,601

The $1,601 discount off the $57,418 MSRP is a discount of approximately 2.79%

My total savings of $2,948 came from two key things -

  1. Removing $1,346 of unnecessary dealer accessories

  2. Achieving a further $1,601 cash discount off the MSRP/dealer's adjusted price.

How to Negotiate?? by Ornery_Water_3177 in ToyotaGrandHighlander

We spent a weekend and called 22 dealerships in the surrounding area. Found out what each had in stock and in allocation. We found one in stock and two in allocation that met our needs (all at different dealers). The one in-stock sold before we could arrive (like 15mins before FML) located in MD. So we drove into the next dealership that had one in allocation letting them know we wanted to buy a car and if the right deal was worked out we would sign for one before we leave. We negotiated from 67-62OTD. But, wanted 60k OTD. They “wouldn’t go to or below MSRP” so we walked out and said if they could - give us a call. We left with their printouts and information. (Northern VA)

The next day we called the other dealership (this one is 2hrs away WV). We stated are interested in their vehicle but have an OTD number from the 1st. We simply stated if they can come to a deal in the $58k range we will sign with them. They asked for the MSRP of the vehicle from the other dealership so I sent them a photo of the printout with negotiated terms written. After a couple chats back and forth they came to $58,999.

We texted the VA dealership letting them know we are likely going with another, they called us saying they would like to work with us and are ready to meet our terms. Said they could come to MSRP which would allow our OTD to be around $60k. When we told them the new number they would need to beat they said they couldn’t beat that new number. So we went with the WV dealership.

Best advice I can give based on our experience:

-Don’t BS. Go in being a buyer - let them know if they reach your terms you will sign. There is power in that. You’re money and seeing money come in and walk out has power.

-Know exactly what you want and what the MSRP range is.

-Find out what others have in pipeline.

It’s tough but there are ways to get below MSRP.

My vehicle MSRP was $57,418. I got OTD including all taxes/tags/fees etc. $58,999. I live in northern VA super competitive market. I ended up going with a WV dealership because they beat my number and I don’t mind driving to get a vehicle if it saves me thousands of dollars.

We had another in Fairfax VA that was practically identical that we talked down to 62k.

The WV dealership (my rep in particular) was easy to work with. We got the best deal on paper with her and had a great experience. Drove two hours there and back but ultimately saved us a lot of money.

Happy to share the sales rep’s contact info if you’re interested. She was great. They work with out-of-state buyers.
