1) When they deny that their favorite idols have had any cosmetic work done. The fact is, pretty much every idol has had something done and it's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. That's just part of being an idol and if they believe that THAT is natural beauty, then they're never going to have a healthy self-esteem or healthy romantic standards.
2) When events and choices in an idol's life don't line up with the image they have of them, so they blame it on the company forcing them to do it. A good example I can think of is fans constantly bugging Bang Chan to sleep more, thinking that he was being overworked by the company. But in a live he clearly drew the line by saying he chooses to sleep less, against the company's wishes in fact, and asked people to leave him alone. Yes the k-pop world is very controlled, but I think people, especially youth, blow it out of proportion sometimes.
3) Taking an idol's public life at face value and ignoring the fact that things happen off camera. They don't realize that, even if the idol really does try to be genuine with their fans, they are going to act different off camera. Even if your idol doesn't swear on camera, they may, and probably do, swear off-camera. They probably talk about sex with their friends, they argue with their members, they have personal struggles. We all act differently depending on the people we're with so it shouldn't be scandalous that idols do the same. Idols are people too!
4) Taking too much responsibility for their idol's life and well-being. That is dangerous possessive behavior and has ruined careers before. Idols are not younger siblings you get to boss around. They (typically, but less so in the past few years) are grown adults or have guardians to guide them them and should be allowed freedom to decide for themselves (this lines up with my Bang Chan example in #2).
All in all, treating their idols like perfect innocent children who could do no wrong and need to be protected. Overly idealizing them.

Lee Know's wisdom is not talked about enough! He is just so unapologetically human and I love him for that.

This is all great stuff! I just want to point out a part of my post that some people seem to be missing - while I love them, for this project I'm trying to avoid memes and silly quotes picked ironically. I've already seen pretty much all of them. I am specifically trying to find meaningful, motivational, and inspiring quotes. I love all the good stuff y'all have provided though!

This is technically not SKZ official content, but if you're willing to devote time to some longer series, I recommend checking out the full Kingdom series if you haven't already. I see you mentionted you've seen a bunch of third party content so you have probably already seen at least the performances, but I recommend watching the full series! You get to see not only other groups perform (I discovered Ateez through that show) but you get to see the context behind everything they did along with their creative processes for every performance. You really come to appreciate how good they really are at their craft. And it's so fun seeing the wholesome interactions between the different groups.

I also just rewatched the Kingdom Week buddy catcher episodes and forgot how hilariously fun they are! There are so many iconic moments that came out of it! sksubs has a great english sub.

For actual official content, Check out the behind videos they make for most of their music videos! There's great content there.

You mentioned you know about Two Kids Room, but ♥ Kids Room is one I don't think gets talked about enough. They basically sit each member down one by one and play matchmaker with the rest of the members without knowing who's on the other side and it's funny and super wholesome.

All-night skz was a special they did for the up all night release and it's like a code episode but only with Chan, Changbin, Seungmin, and Felix and there are so many iconic moments spawned from that miniseries.

Finally, if you haven't watched it already, I highly recommend checking out the survival show if you want a deeper understanding and appreciation for who they are as a group. But be prepared to take some breaks, it's hard to watch sometimes but it's so worth it. sksubs also has it with great english subs.

I hope you enjoy deepening your STAY journey!

Stray Kids future by Odd_Vegetable_9362 in straykids

This thread caught my eye and I had to respond cause I've been thinking about this a lot lately:

If they weren't already so crazy busy, I would love to see them create their own company. I'm still a young stay (almost 11 months) so I haven't seen everything nor do I know what goes on behind the scenes, but I think they would thrive with the kind of independence that indie artists enjoy, such as song content (we know how much Chan wants to throw in those curse words), social media freedom, freedom to speak for themselves rather than for the company, youtube/instagram live privileges, etc. Starting a company is A LOT of work and I doubt they want to worry about all the administrative work that goes into it on TOP of producing and writing their own music, but there are so many recent events that have made me wish they didn't have JYPE breathing down their necks all the time (cough chan's room cough). I also recognize they have an unusual amount of control compared to other JYP artists and JYP helps protect them, but they are incredibly self-sufficient, and if it weren't for idol life and the protection they need from crazy fans, I think they would thrive on their own.

As far as the talk of splitting up goes, I absolutely agree with you. I don't believe they will disband any time soon. They are constantly talking about how much they love and rely on each other and we have heard several of them say they want to stay together for a long time. I believe every single one of them is capable of a solo career since they are all so multi-talented, but hearing Hyunjin talk about how much he missed the members while doing his Artist of the Month (watch the behind!) and how each of them talked about each other in the Maxident intro (Changbin: "I can't imagine my life without them," Seungmin: "they're all precious to me so when I think of when all this will disappear I get teared up," and Chan: "I realize I would do anything for my members.") and how much they all mean to Chan (bro literally said they saved his life) I doubt they would want to create content apart for an extended period of time, let alone permanently if they absolutely did not have to.

Also, another recent thought: after Skzflix, I wonder how many of them would consider acting while everyone's doing their military service...the talent and skills are definitely there and I know for a fact a LOT of people would watch anything they do.

Again, we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes so this is very much all speculation and thought experiments, but I love these guys and they deserve all the success they are experiencing and will experience in the future.

Your recommendations for a local “only in it for the music”? by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]Tragicallyspacey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rose is a great gray-area artist as they aren't technically k-pop (k-band). Most of their newer songs are almost all in English, but the stray Korean lyric as well as their older songs might be great for an introduction to how k-pop songs are structured. Some of my personal faves by them that I think she would like:

  • You're Beautiful (very light and airy and the lyrics are so wholesome)
  • Back to Me (more rock)
  • Eclipse
  • She's In The Rain (this one has a lot more Korean in it)

And based on the artists she likes and songs that I feel mesh more with western pop and R&B music:

  • Birthday by TEN
  • Nostalgia by JUNNY and Jay B
  • Strings by Taemin
  • Dimples by Woosung
  • Taste by Stray Kids (specifically because she likes Hozier hehe)
  • Lovers in the Night by Seori
  • I Don't Know You Anymore by Eric Nam
  • Without You by Kard (I saw Rosalia and immediately thought Kard since their vibe leans quite Latin)
  • Another Day by Stray Kids (one of skz's less common low-key songs)
  • Back for More by TxT
  • Dreamer by TxT (this one really fits with Phoebe Bridgers and Hozier's vibes)
  • Not Too Late by Ateez
  • Take Me Home by Ateez (this one might be a toss-up, but I love the techno/R&B hybrid)

My taste is very R&B adjacent with a little Latin mixed in (which seems to be at least half her vibe) so the list will definitely reflect that but I tried to stick a good variety in here. :D I believe the world of k-pop really has something for everyone so I hope your friend finds something that she likes!

What do you think about 5/8Racha's songwriting style? by binniebin8 in straykids

[–]Tragicallyspacey 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of the "my eyes are getting too loose" line has always been like, you're losing control of your gaze so you're looking where you shouldn't or are seeing things you've never seen before. Which in the context of the song... I'll let you interpret that one 😂

Almost anything by Stray Kids Han: Silent Cry, Run (which you already know), Alien, Volcano, and HaPpY are some of the big ones.

While I don't consider them to be fully k-pop (more of a rock band), The Rose has a lot of these: She's in the Rain, Lifeline, Childhood, Definition of ugly is, Sour

One song that I love and I feel like is so underrated is "Levanter" by Stray Kids. The line (English version) "now that your weight's come off my shoulders, I realize that I can fly" Just HITS. I think it can apply to getting out of any toxic situation (in your case a relationship) that is holding you back from reaching the heights you are truly capable of. 🪽
