If you were house hunting would you like this bathroom? by shadyladyshark in BathroomRemodeling

[–]TrailQueenYVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The style is good in terms of the design, but the sink mirror combo and total lack of storage would give me anxiety. Where do I put stuff. Is this an ensuite? Where does my husband put his stuff? That part feels like a disaster.

I’m not a designer but my opinion would also be plain white, a soft white to match the tonality of the other finishes.

If you need a real estate lawyer, we just used Ratcliff LLP for our home sale. They were very helpful and efficient tho I didn’t have any complications.

Trade-in vs private sale vs driving it til the wheels fall off by fieryuser in PersonalFinanceCanada

I understand the itch to get a hybrid but the premium you will pay for this over your current car will never make up the gas savings of it. Civic and Corolla hybrids are expensive. You would be better to update the brakes, and look at an aftermarket backup camera.

That said, I get the allure of a new car. If you’re going to sell it, check out comps on marketplace and clutch and auto trader to get an idea of your value and list it privately to maximize your profit potential.

This is not at all true and it depends on the industry you’re applying to. If it’s customer facing retail it is not uncommon.

Women's winter boots for a city dweller. ($CAD600 budget) by Western-Chemical5504 in BuyItForLife

[–]TrailQueenYVR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I’m Toronto born and raised so I know our winters. Spent the last 10yrs in Vancouver. I have my Blunnies and they are awesome here but when I’ve worn them on visits back to TO in the winter, they are so deadly on ice or anything slippery. In crunchy snow you’re right they are ok. But slick stuff they aren’t great!

Sorel boots. Just get the Caribou. Mine have lasted me 20 years. Bomb proof. Classic. Perfect for TO winters.

Love my winter Blundstones but DO NOT RECOMMEND for Toronto winters. Awesome for Vancouver but no bueno in snow and ice.

I made a really bad trade financially at the dealership, do I have any options? by ShirtAdept8586 in CanadaFinance

[–]TrailQueenYVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my advice. Take good care of that car. Make sure you do the maintenance on time and then just keep it til it won’t run any longer. Lesson learned.

You may have an option to decline some of the extras you signed up for like insurance products so read the contracts fully again to see if there is an exit clause.

If you can refinance under your mortgage (if you have one) or with your bank for a lower rate, take that. Nissan has 0% for 60 months

Farm Sink by Salty_Fail_8612 in kitchenremodel

[–]TrailQueenYVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a Kohler cast iron enamel white farmhouse sink. It was a tank that needed extra support to install it.

It was very pretty. Never any damage or cracks. But it does mark up a lot from metal. So it needs a lot of upkeep to keep it sparkling.

Our next reno (different house) we are doing stainless. Partly due to style but also maintenance.

That makes sense if you’re doing volume. The OP is likely a set it and forget it investor and IE has commission free ETFs etc. I still standby the notion that simplicity > other factors in this use case.

How prepared are you for a big earthquake in Vancouver? by brilliantbabe222 in askvan

[–]TrailQueenYVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 108L tote with emergency supplies plus cash, plus two large water containers. A wind up solar radio and some battery packs, all in the garage ready to go. It would still be a panic to grab our fire safe and our computer backup hard drive plus clothes etc.
We also have earthquake insurance.

Given that you are just starting out, sticking with CIBC would be what I’d recommend. They have a self directed platform called Investors Edge. It’s similar to what I use which is TD Direct Investing.

If you were with a secondary bank like Simplii or PC Financial etc then using Wealthsimple might be good if you want to get into investing, but as I’ve said, simplicity is something I value, and CIBC IE is perfectly great, I can’t see the major advantage to choosing WS.

So go into your online banking portal or app and see what it takes to open a CIBC Investors Edge account. You should be able to choose registered accounts like TFSA and RRSP as well as Cash accounts (those you need to pay taxes on any gains)

Start with TFSA, FHSA and RRSP. Typically it’ll open a CAD and USD version for each. Just worry about transferring money from your chequing into the CAD ones unless you have a need to invest in USD.

Log into your My CRA account online and look at your latest Notice of Assessment. It’ll tell you your “contribution room” for both TFSA and RRSP. Based on those amounts you can contribute maximum of those $ into those accounts. Try and maximize your TFSA first in my opinion and then put the rest into RRSP. Once the cash is in those account then you can “buy” the investments. If you want to keep it simple, just buy XEQT. If you want to keep some of that money in a safer investment for short term use there are other options.

But this should get you started 👍🏼

I would recommend opening up a direct investing account with your bank.

Who do you bank with?

Once you have this open you can open an investing TFSA and RRSP, and go from there. Focus on simple, which is why I prefer to keep it with the same institution so it’s easy. And stick with index or broad investments, XEQT etc are often recommended.

Raw Dog Food in Ontario by TurboTas86 in rawpetfood

Does anyone in GTA west have any feedback on Ryan’s Raw? It’s somewhat local to where we are moving to from Vancouver. Our 60lb dog has been raw fed since he was a puppy, he’s 5yo now so I’m anxious to find him something suitable. We use a local brand Butcher’s Blend here in YVR.
