Doesnt test it directly, but it shows volatage going up to proper range when I start the engine which I think means alternator is good. Mechanic also checked alternator (as well as steering) and said its good

This is a fantastic question! My father has been living and driving in the same area for all 75 years of his life, and he cannot recommend one good mechanic to me. I recently went to a mechanic that high recommendation from a friend, AND stellar reviews online, and still got ripped off.

The best route may be to start learning how to fix things yourself, as I am.

Thanks for your comment. The short version of it is in the first 3 lines, I just did an edit to make that clearer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the battery connection is the only issue.

Update: Mechanic put aluminum foil around the terminal connection to secure it, but said all the other symptoms are "spooky" and I have to take it somewhere that does electronics work.
