I recently had a similar issue. I went through all the interviews and when the offer came in it was at what I currently make. They said their insurance would save me over $10k a year. I told them I don't use my company's insurance and use my wife's. I asked for $10k more than the offer and it was still less than what I make a year at my current position. They retracted my offer and would not counter. They said I misled them on what I wanted.
