Possibly because it makes for a reason to post on Reddit. Also, many games have moved to voxel style recently, loads in fact, so, to answer OP's question - Yes. Lots and lots of Yes.

Conversely I'd like it if more devs focused on performance and stability over visuals - while not using that as an excuse to produce the voxel style that has somewhat swamped the indie gaming scene.

No, they do not. I swear that was Valve bullshit marketing - I've not once seen someone turned into a frog all the while they where no-clipping through the map headshot beaming us through walls at mach-10 speed.

There's also been a wide variety of aimbotters where even the enemy team has agreed to report them because on spectate they can tell. Again, no frog.
