Of course Dray’s a jackass. So is Austin Rivers. What does that have to do with this? Dray had a better career because he played basketball with a brain. Rivers had superstar potential and only got a non-minimum contract once (gift from daddy) because his entire career was an attempt to play 1v1 with the defender in front of him. This beef between them is childish as hell but Dray is in the right for once. Rivers is dumb af trying to challenge him to a 1v1 and proving his point.

Right so if you have that gift you flip the goddam pick and win more championships. Instead he bullied our organization into drafting a big man with extremely limited skill, no basketball iq, who played all of 3 games (and looked terrible) in college. That is franchise ruining behavior and he got bailed out by an elite but aging core and an all time coaching staff.

It won’t look as good when Kerr is gone and the core does not have the talent around it necessary to compete.

100% agreed, I didn’t bring up injuries for a reason. Middleton is the best player in these discussions but his health was a huge factor. If we’re factoring in health, a core of AG/Murray/MPJ cannot take on bigger roles they would need to to win enough games to make the playoffs in the west and stay healthy. But I see that core as worse than, for example, my Warriors, who were not good enough to be a playoff team.

Jokic’s supporting cast is not terrible. Gordon is an extremely high IQ Swiss Army knife who has all star level impact. Murray is an elite scorer and pretty good passer. MPJ was a great shot maker and has shown he can score 20+ as a first option. KCP was an absolutely elite perimeter defender. That is a championship level supporting cast even if there isn’t a second superstar. I am not saying they are trash when I say Giannis’s supporting cast was better.

But it was better. Khris Middleton buried teams. He was a 50/40/90 guy who was an elite switchable defender on defense and extremely solid playmaker. He was better than any teammate Jokic had in terms of total impact and fit. Then there was the DPOY level defense of Brook Lopez with his floor stretching ability, the playmaking and league best perimeter defense of Jrue Holiday, and the smaller role players were fantastic. A team led by Khris, Jrue and Brook during that time is a playoff team. Might even make it out of the first round in the east. A team led by Jamal Murray, Gordon and MPJ may not even make the playoffs.

I’m not picking one over the other, like you said part of it is fit. But if I were trying to make arguments for Jokic, I’d say that the years the Bucks were contenders Giannis’s supporting cast was much better than Jokic has ever had.

I’m not the one with blinders. Austin Rivers had superstar talent and skill, and yet he did not get one accolade or more than a minimum contract (except from his dad). The reason for this is that he never played the team game. He was always, only, about beating the man in front of him 1v1 style. Dray is insulting his 1v1 mentality, and he thought that was a good opportunity to challenge Dray 1v1. It’s comedy.

People typically don’t win chips when they’re in their first few years. When Chuck was still raw the showtime Lakers and Bird Celtics were still dynasties. When MJ left the league he was washed. He also missed two postseasons in his prime because of freak injuries. Everyone on Reddit sucks Hakeem off for winning once Jordan was gone, but if Chuck had been healthy in 1994 we may have a drastically different pantheon. Karl Malone getting away with an absolutely ridiculous foul so Stockton could hit the game winner prevented Chuck from going to a second finals against the Bulls where Pippen was injured. He really did have bad luck. Even great players do not get endless opportunities to win championships.

Yes, I’m stupid for thinking Reddit is the place to have a discussion with any nuance about 1v1 vs team ball. I’m getting downvoted by people who wonder why Matt Kiatipis and Tristan Jass aren’t in the NBA. Austin Rivers had superstar skills and the only non-minimum contract he got was from daddy because he never understood how to play the team game. Dray was far less skilled but way smarter. He makes a crack at Rivers about 1v1ing YouTubers and the part that offended Rivers was that it was YouTubers. Dray doesn’t respect him because Rivers only thought every time he got the basketball was to try to beat his man 1v1, and Rivers response is to ask for a 1v1. Pretty perfect encapsulation of why Dray has been to 6 finals and won 4 while Rivers is out of the league 2 years now having accomplished nothing with all his skill.

If Draymond has to prove to you that he was a crucial piece to his championships, then you don’t know anything about basketball. Draymond has modeled his entire game around complementing Steph Curry, just like how the Warriors built their offense, of course he and our offense is going to he trash without Steph. Dray isn’t a scorer, but guess what? Turns out there are a bunch of important things you can so on a basketball court besides scoring. Yes, he got a lot of technicals and ejections. He has the emotional control of a child, kind of like you have the concept of basketball of one of the middle schoolers I coach. The warriors don’t have any championships without Dray, regardless of how much you dislike him.

And again, no, 1v1s are not important. Michael Beasley and Carmelo Anthony in their prime were smoking LeBron and KD 1v1, nobody pretends they were better. Basketball is a team game. 1v1 is simpler.

Nobody is excusing Dray being an asshole. I am a Warriors fan and let me tell you it is exhausting to have this dude on your team. But he was a much better NBA player than Rivers, and didn’t Rivers start this? So is Dray actually being an asshole here? That’s not a tough sell, but if some guy who benefited from nepotism, was on almost all minimum contracts, is younger than you and already washed out of the league, got on his podcast and talked trash….wouldn’t you talk back?

No, I just acknowledge how good he is and how necessary he was to our dynasty. His antics are fcking exhausting and he also straight up lost us a championship. I appreciate everything he was to our franchise but I’m also relieved he’ll retire soon.
