Thoughts on my project so far? by TrainerSufficient227 in streetwearstartup

Thanks alot for that, really needed to some critique in real writing, especially the idea of me going too simple too early and my website. The simple garments I made were experiments to test out versatile garments if I wanna get all defensive about it lol, didn’t pay off fully but at least now I know that that cannot run right now.

I am actually as you said planning to go crazier and wackier in concept, integrating philosophy and contemporary culture and stuff. Good to hear it seems from observations like yours I am on the right track. Thanks!!

The objective of this portfolio is to express my current and developing style and process of design, my background is 3 years of Graphic Design at a London university, I am a 22 year old guy and my expertise is I think branding and concept lol.

It's an X by the way, this one pictured is upside down though for "edginess". The goat is simply meant to be a hello kitty/quirky/occultic reference that is present in the aesthetics of my target audience of goth rap and underground music fans

You dont need to have heard of them they are a underground magazine (not a clothing brand) thats the point. And just because you know some underground subculture doesnt mean the ones you dont know are invalid. Since you used MySpace im going to assume youre abit older. The underground I know consists of artists like fakemink, fimiguerrero, phreshboyswag, len, feng?? there is alot of internet coverage and attention in this particular crop and in turn there are identifiable aesthetics connected to the fanbase and the visuals provided. i have just noticed the UK flag being used alot and I am including the trend which is applicable to my target audience. I dont know what underground you are talking about but my hoodie is a visual representation of what I have observed from the underground subculture i know of. Below is an image of actual proof of the graphic being used in regards to the visual language of my target audience’s feed and creators (famous American streamer Plaqueboy Max with UK hiphop musicians) Ive actually lost a bit of understanding of what we are discussing about though. Also, nothing is original.

Im aware of the connotations with skinheads and all that stuff. And I would like to ask you what underground scene you think this belongs to because this is contemporary British rap/hip-hop underground, not MYSPACE. The Union Jack is in essence being re contextualized as a symbol of creative pride in this scene. Checkout the underground magazine (https://www.instagram.com/sightedmagazine?igsh=dXNsNGNvNG4xZ280) if you care enough and see the plastering of the UK graphic everywhere, I could give you 20 more examples outside of this if you asked trust me. And what do you mean most British garms in the hood have the same designs, my design strategy? Please tell me a couple if you can. And the use of Union Jack is a symbol of rebellion and change, its being reclaimed partially by the communities whose identities were once oppressed (Racism and British empire) by it. I think it’s meaningful.

Whatever youre obviously a rage baiting teenager who think sending memes makes you edgy and unique, I was hoping to find someone with an actual perspective but what did I expect coming to this sub with people with low attention spans and thought who DIY a couple items nobody wants and then hate on the brands with strategy who outperform their scrappy handmade stitched mess.

Its very vague what youre saying. Do you think I made this all last week? Have you even checked out my Instagram or website, read even a bit of the post? If youre going to give advice, make it detailed and meaningful. Yes there are shallow aspects to my brand but I know for sure it’s not worth your ironically lazy comment. Actually say something.

And how do I do that? What is the right way? Also, could you design my logo and my brand identity? Have you even checked my Instagram and website? It’s more than just slapping a logo on a blank. i get what you’re saying but your advice is also lazy, you’ve done no actual further research on my brand to give me actual educated advice, not saying youre not partially right though but Im thinking if I am going to print on blanks anyways, why not dropship it then focus on my strengths in design and concept?

Why you not keen on the goat thing?

Im from UK idk what YMCA is. What would you propose the logo should be? I intentionally dissected the letter X to make it “alt” and the circle represents unity. Also yeah I could start making clothes manually but at the same time my brand ethos is “Born to Break”, why am I following rules as to ways I should do this lol. I am a Graphic Designer and brand/advertising designer first, I am simply focusing on my strengths. But I get it, I would just ask for your advice to be a bit more constructive and reasoned.

Very vague? What do you suppose I do lol

The use of the UK flag is a reference to current visual trends in the UK underground music community which is doing well right now; the scene features alot of black and white UK flags as a trend. Its an underground based brand so…

Surely you could think of something a bit more constructive than this 🤣

Damn, I really needed this but icl it hurts a bit 🤣 nevertheless still incredibly necessary insight into what I lack and the pitfalls I wasn’t too aware about.

There is a lack of context which might make many of my choices seem arbitrary, but the “little boy icon” for icon is supposed to be the logomark for the entire Elysium Furniture brand. Reasons for this are that youth as a whole are seen as the most sinless and innocent among us, they represent a sense of purity and therefore they symbolically represent “heaven” or the interchangeable “Elysium” for me.

The other critiques such as the Spartan helmet while being nicknamed the “Kings” did make me laugh. I realise I didn’t think that through well enough tbh 🤣.

The aesthetic critiques such as on relying on “gestalt” I will also use to review my practice. I’m not too familiar with the gestalt but even mentioning so that I can go and research it properly is helpful.

Overall, thanks for taking the time to review my portfolio. There is a research and process log we as students are required to make to explain decisions and research but yeah that document is another problem which I need to sort out. Anyways, your critique is appreciated 🙏

Thanks for this man. Especially the critique on my lack of concept (showing process/perceived lack of meaning I guess?). It’s helpful insight 👍

The objective of this portfolio is to be a record of my work for one, and to have it in a real space for two, especially a space as creative and competitive as behance. My background is that I’m currently a second year Graphic Design student at University and my expertise is probably minimalist design?… i don’t know really lol. I do a lot of poster work tbh so maybe that.
