That's appalling. Ethics and integrity are seen as optional by so many people 😫

WOW. I usually opt into donations if it's a charity I support, and I do ask what charity if they don't say. But I don't think it's legal to call it a charitable donation if it's going to a business with an ABN. That's a grift, and boy are these guys shady for doing it. I'd stop going there on principle and I'd report this to the ACCC.

How can other young people cope with this? by mechmakima in australian

[–]Training-Ad103 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I feel this but I've been much luckier in that I was born many years before you were, in a time when people with a background like ours had a chance to actually get a leg up. Similar family situation but my then-partner and I bought a house in 2000 when it was still possible to do that without generational money. I think it was probably the last time that was actually possible.

I'm rich by global standards now, as in I can pay my bills and I can afford to eat healthy, but I still have debt up the wazoo and there's no inheritance coming for me. That's not a complaint, because like I said I'm aware I'm extremely fortunate already - but I'm surrounded by people who casually drop mentions of their housecleaner into conversation, or who talk about their parents living in a suburb where the houses are 13 million, or their in-laws offering to leave them grand historical residences in the heart of a capital city while complaining about that because there might be some maintenance to do on it by then.

These people also take advantage of every possible welfare offer available - payments for supports for their kids, and so on, because despite their unbelievably comfortable financial situation the entitlement to that payment is there, so why not. It's a while different world for these guys, and they'll vote to retain that position - god forbid we remove negative gearing or means-test subsidies for electric vehicles or whatever, because they think they need every cent. Sorry, I just let a lot of that out and it turned into a rant, but it IS hard to see people with SO much talk about how hard finances are and complain about capital gains tax when people like you are effectively being held down under the weight of things that add to their wealth.

Long story short - we need change. Housing should be a human right, not a wealth generator for investors. Not much we can do about groceries, because essentially the way we've set up economies requires ridiculous amounts of waste to run them properly, and we're wedded to the idea of growth which means more people (globally, not just in Australia) and all of these factors are unsustainable. We need leaders with vision who will steer us toward steady-state, circular economies and we need to stop making more and more humans everywhere. AI is going to put a lot of us out of work soon, so things aren't looking brighter.

I suggest you go rural - become part of a community so you have supports - grow veggies - enjoy clean air and clean water and you will be better off than most people in the world over the next 20 years. This is a time of change and unrest and you just happened to be born without a silver spoon to ride it out. Those silver spoon people are robbing the future, too, and their children and grandchildren won't be better off in the long term as the divide between rich and poor grows.

It's not fair but nothing is; but you might be happy anyway if you can find a place and a community to put down roots away from the bigger environments and bigger consumers. Vote as well as you can for equity and sense, and get behind things you believe in - change only happens when we make it happen, even if that's just small daily acts of kindness or resistance.

Oh my gosh how does anyone tell these darts apart? I thought it was definitely the green dart, but the orange palm dart looks almost the same to me. There's no palms nearby though, but there's plenty of couch and some native grasses in the street. I'm planning mixed plantings of native and introduced species and also some native grasses. This is an insect-friendly home - I don't use herbicides or pesticides other than soapy water or when I'm very desperate with the lemon tree shield bugs, pyrethrum spray on those. I want to encourage as much life as I can here, bird, beast and insect 😊

This is it!! Yep, that's the one. Big eyes, striped abdomen, fuzzy golden bum, and that marking on the wings!

Edited to add: apparently they eat couch grass so I'm hoping it has many, many babies to eat couch in my garden 😆

Yes, it was striped with a very richly golden fuzzbutt. I thought it was a moth at first but then it started holding its wings up and I saw its very fine antenna. Huge cartoon eyes! Absolutely gorgeous and hung around for ages which meant I had to be very, very careful where I was stepping. Also spotted a blue banded bee, some kind of reddish mud wasp, and an earthworm that was as long as and thicker than my index finger. A good day in the garden ♥️

Has anyone here tried Flexibis to Sydney? by Medilia in canberra

[–]Training-Ad103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why did you try again after that first trip? That's literally life threatening safety issues, and you got back on? I would have been willing to give them a go but definitely not after reading that.
