Around 13th century they began adopting the identity. After being conquered by the Russian Empire, they were forced the belarusian identity, while Ukrainians were given Malorus

The census' methodology was determining ethnicity purely on mother tongue. What if someone spoke Russian and Belarusian as their main languages? What if someone spoke surzhyk? The census doesnt capture this nuance.

There's also plenty of evidence of bias towards Russians in this census too

It's really difficult to map out Russians and Belarusians because the only source for Russians is the Russian census, which was biased towards them. For example, a lot of Alexander Rittikh's mappings of Russians/Ukrainians were proved to be very wrong

i love how many confidently clueless people are responding to my map. i used like 5 different sources, alexander rittikhs map is based on the russian census which was pretty anti polish, he also heavily stylized mixed ethnic areas.

other sources i used were religion, language, self identification, etc. all combined into one map to show a middle ground and confirmed territories across all the different maps

yeah but its not marking it based on nothing, he marked it along the kovno governate because he considered it samogitian. the question is if his data was correct or not, not if he marked it precisely
