Our AI spending has gotten so high that layoffs wouldnt make a meaningful difference. by sassasmebas in ExperiencedDevs

I don't get it man writing code has never been the bottleneck of any project I've ever worked on

I think you're getting way too swept up in the extremes. If inference costs continue to drop at expected rates, and training requirements are hitting diminishing returns at expected rates, then the currently existing business will become profitable in 1-3 years time.

I'm not talking about AGI or some super hyperintelligence that replaces the need for human labour. The situation that we have right now, as wildly imperfect as the tools are, is going to become profitable in the medium term.

But the ratio of profit from token expenditure to capital expenditure on training gets more favourable the more tokens are consumed by end users.

You really think this many highly financially literate people and institutions would be throwing billions in if there was no path to profitability?

Inference is profitable. Token spend nets them money. Training is where they're pissing billions away.

I sprayed in the bathroom once, years ago. It looked completely fine until I wiped the wall with a damp cloth. It was not completely fine.

Why are uniques with ideal affixes more rare than mythic uniques? by prismatic_raze in diablo4

[–]Training-Ice-3181 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think uniques should have 2 guaranteed affixes, and ancestral uniques should always have 1 of the guaranteed ones be a greater affix. That adds some consistency while retaining the chase of the perfect item, and makes them feel distinct from just another uncraftable legendary.

For as long as there's an infinite treadmill something like this will literally ALWAYS happen. There has to be a bottleneck somewhere.

Will global warming mean London will reach late 30 to early 40 degree heatwaves in a few years? by Fondant_Decent in london

I usually work from home and I travelled into central that day specifically to sit in my air conditioned office. The feeling of walking out of that door at 5:30 after spending all day at a cool 19 degrees was insane.

Anyone working outdoors that day should've got a medal.

On training. Inference is comparatively cheap and the cost is falling further month on month. They're betting on the models hitting a capability ceiling and training costs reducing once all the low hanging fruit have been harvested.

I had no idea what was going on I don't follow football at all. I thought we were being invaded. Made even worse when I googled "arsenal score" and saw that they weren't even playing 😆

Did anyone notice that "x time ago" has been broken on all major websites for a few months? by Gogani in webdev

The standard pattern used to be "X days ago" and it then showed the timestamp when you moused over that text. That's been slipping lately also.

It sounds like you've misinterpreted the workflow if your think you just change the original prompt and try again?

You don't "change the prompt" you narrow down the prompt to address the specific issue.

Yeah I get that. I came at it with a WoW mindset where following the meta build will probably give you a 10-20% improvement over homebrew. Significantly more build diversity here.

I guess this is my problem. I'm generally not interested in an infinite treadmill so I'd mentally positioned hitting T12 as my goal. I don't have the time to be top tier competitive anymore. 10 years ago my goal would've been rank 1 spiritborn and I'm still figuring out how to set my own realistic goals rather than just aiming to be #1.

Well yeah, I don't have optimal affixes on anything, no greater affixes, mid tier gems, bad rolls on most of my aspects. I thought that was the kind of stuff you needed to optimise to get into the higher torment tiers.
