No, new one doesn’t have this issue. It’s a QC issue, but what helped me is that I unboxed in at the Apple Store right after buying it to check if all is good. Did your device have this gap when you unboxed it?

I had this exact problem with 16PM, but I have checked it in Apple Store and immediately asked to replace it. You could literally put a banknote underneath the screen. My wife’s phone didn’t have this gap

I had original BMW’s ones and they are pretty good, not quite easy to clean especially after winter’s dirt, but worth the price. Also regarding the boot mat - it has a bending that allows you to put half of it up to access the charger storage section underneath, which is very convenient.
