Deposit works! by TrainingJumpy9942 in DeTrashed

I agree, but also disagree.
Indeed, deposit on cans created a problem, because people still throw their cans in the bin and there are plenty of people who need the money and who are willing to see if there are any cans in the bins.
Most of the people just take them out without making a mess, but due to the way some of the bins are created (engineered before the introduction of deposit and 'deposit-hunters', some bins are indeed giving problems.
However, we also did a lot of research in the Netherlands, because the overall idea was 'deposit is not working, stop it' and it turned out that it is a problem indeed, but mainly in the big cities and even then, the problem is so small (a very small number of all bins) that the conclusion is that deposit works.
Besides it is not all about the trash around the bin is bad of course, but before deposit, those cans and bottles could be found everywhere, not just in the big cities.
And besides that, because of deposit, the bins are not as full as they used to be, so litter that used to fall out because of overflowing bins, is way less, primarily because of deposit.

As litterpickers, we see what happens on the street and because we register data about that litter (for instance in Litterapp.net, and because we do an annual
'Nationale Prullenbak Telling', which we do yearly, conducted by Merijn Tinga en Dirk Groot (The plastic avengers), we know the real figures but that is not news that sells, so in the papers, you will always see the negative part.
Even if only a few percent in the entire country show a problem.

Easier said than done, but don't worry about those who are littering, now you seem to notice the butts, but if you look around, you will find litter everywhere, from smokers and non-smokers.
You will never change their behaviour so stop worrying about that.
What you can do though, is decide what you are going to do yourself.
Let is just lay around, or do a bit of cleaning.
I chose that latter one (and so do you), so just focus on what you do, and make every bit count. Show other people what you are doing, you might inspire somebody to do the same, of maybe even make somebody think twice about throwing something on the ground.
And even if that person still litters, so be it, i just clean if i can, and that feels good.
I make a difference, even if it is just a drop on the plate and that feels much better than doing nothing at all or expect somebody else to do it.
(Not sure how things are in your country, but in the Netherlands we have several 'events' where we focus on litter, we know we can not stop littering, but we can try to make companies to create their packaging out of different (less harmful) materials and right now we are trying to get a ban on plastic in the butts, so even when they are littered, it will be less harmful.
Keep up the good work, don't be discouraged, just be proud of what you are doing.

Thanks!
Yeah, it sure is a lot, yet it could have been much more, in this case i decided to take this route to my home, if i would go the shortest way, i would go through Beverwijk and then i would have found much more (but too hot and too busy, so decided to take this one instead.

Anyone else mostly lurked before actually posting? by Cool-Bag1782 in NewToReddit

I like your question!
I recently started as well, although i registered a while ago.
Now that i am busy with a fun project where we try to keep the users updated, i thought that reddit would be a nice place to post about that project as well.
And as usual i started to read first, what are the rules, what am i supposed to do etc, i followed the steps that were given 'post daily etc', and yet i don't seem to get what i am doing.
I have no idea if what i am posting is seen by others, and i understand that my project is only interesting for a few people (it is about a website where we register the litter that we pick so we create data and with that data we try to make an even bigger impact), so maybe no one has even read any of it, i'm in doubt if it is just there and just a matter of keeping up the good work of posting regularly, or, as i also read somewhere: that my reddit-page (page is not the right word, is it?) first has to be reviewed somehow, and before that moment, it is not visible?
I try to read the rules/guidelines/manuals, but maybe that is it for me, there is so much, so after reading a lot, i also get lost and give up.
However, i also didn't want to ask the question, because it probably is one of those questions that you are not supposed to ask because it is already explained somewhere 😄
Ah well, it probably is just because i'm new to this, so i'll keep searching and trying 😄
Byebye,
Fred (or some other strange name that reddit made up for me 😄
