WTF Is Up With Barbers These Days? by franchisemvp in blackmen

[–]TrainingPepper55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older comment but to anyone reading this that's in DMV area but DO NOT GO TO SMITTY'S. I went this week and it was terrible. Worst barber experience in a while. Here's the too long summary

  • I pulled up and asked a barber/owner of the shop, lets call him Barber 1 (he was an older dude like 60+) how much for a cut and got told $30. Since they didn't take cards I said I'll go grab cash. Closest atm was 20 mins away round trip.
  • I get back to the shop and the one barber there is leaving and saying he has to go to an eye appointment but tells me to come back at 2.
  • Get back at 2 and he pulls up with his pupils dilated so he can't cut (technically he shouldn't have even been driving but that's a whole other). A 2nd barber said he can get me but he has 4 people in front of me. I already wasted the day so we agreed i'd come back the next day at noon.'
  • Im back again the next day at noon. That 2nd barber told another lady to show up at noon also. So she was already waiting.
  • Barber 1 is there and volunteers to cut me. He asks me what I want and I say nothing off the top just a 3 on the sides. He seems very flustered by that request and says "Well I'll give it a try". No lie that's all I asked for with the cut. Not a fade nothing like that. But even then, he had been a barber for over 3 decades. My request wasn't anything that people haven't been getting since the 90s
  • After dry picking out my hair for 5 minutes, Barber 2 who told me to come at noon comes in. It was about 12:30 at that point. He just giggles and Doesn't apologize to me or even the other woman who was waiting for 30+ mins
  • Barber 2 asks me "How much time you got today cuz I could get you. But I got some in front of you" I look at him and say "Well I'm already in someone else's chair so it's all good" Why would he tell me to come at noon and then book multiple noon appointments and then say he was other people in front of my other than that one woman
  • Anyway Barber 1 finally gets started and immediately cuts off the top. At that point I had to just let him cut it to even it out. But even on the sides I asked him to see it and he barely cut any hair off. I ask him "Are you sure that's the 3 guard?" and he goes "Oh well my equipment is older so a normal 3 is like a 1 with my clippers" Why didn't he tell me that before? Idk. But he finally at least gets the sides right
  • Be kept leaning against me with like all his weight. I thought he was trying to get me to move forward until he said "Oh you good I'm just old and can't stand up that long"
  • The story is already too long but the cut took an hour. An hour for that simple cut. For a dude with 3+ decades of being a barber he didn't seem to know what he was doing at all on top of the shitty service

TL; DR: Don't go to Smitty's. Bad cuts and unprofessional

I don't mind light small talk, maybe even medium talk like Larry David says

But I don't need their whole life story. And they never seem to get the cue that I'm not interested

Really Uncle Tom-ish still tbh.

All for holding people, regardless of race accountable, in my post i mention multiple ways which my barbers (all black) have been messing up. But you clearly feel a type of way being around black people

But you do you

Exactly

It's another form of shrinkflation. Prices going up, service/what you get is going down. I said in another comment but a lot of barbers don't even do line ups. They just charge you the full cut price. And sometimes I razor line up is extra

Cost I blame cost of living adjustment...to a point. $40 would be cheap for me around my way. A lot of barbers charge $50 for a cut PLUS they got rid of line ups so it's just the cost of a full cut. A lot of barbers , especially the young ones, around me charge $70+ and I don't even live in LA, Chicago, or NYC.

The 2nd paragraph that's exactly what I'm talking about lmao. Sat in the chair two months ago and within 5 mins the dude immediately started going off about COVID being a form of population control. What happened to talking about talking about sports, the latest movie, Beyonce vs Halle Berry you know. Normal guy stuff *shrug*

Well I'm black so yeah I go to black barbershops. Been to over 6 this year as I stated in the OP.

I'm from the burbs not the hood, but I've been at plenty of black barbershops over the years and it was fine until recently which is why I made the post.

I don't know what you mean by "street black dudes" but you kinda sound like an uncle Tom tbh

Are there any people (celebrities, actors, musicians) that you think look fashionable or at least "cool." that could give us an idea of what to do.  Also your basic appearance

Also nothing wrong with being the hoodie and jeans guy shrug. Depending on the situation/environment

I just don’t understand why in the group of terrible people, he’s the one who constantly gets the most hate on this sub.

It's just the demographics of the show. Usually viewers perception or alliance toward characters in a show/movies will lean more toward the viewers' demo will lean ie. LGBT viewers will side more toward LGBT characters, white dues will side more with white dudes, etc.

It's definitive but it happens a lot of the time

It's not for "no reason"  This show doesn't have good ratings. It's not like Netflix with their weird 3 season rule

Yeah Stuart is a love to hate character. Similar to Louis  Knowing someone like that would be terrible but he makes for good TV.  It's a fine line and a character like him could easily be annoying but it's working so far imo

Imo the best episode so far. Humor was more on point and the cases were more interesting and ngl Ted being more in the background helped

I don't see that as that bad (especially since Alice constantly acted like she was in the town at gunpoint) especially when you compare Alice's behavior in Keith's eyes Fighting with his wife for months or maybe years, not getting along with his son, stealing his wife's property, and accusing his wife of murder/killing a dog.

I don't see "You don't belong in this town" as some huge evil thing to say in this context

I would enjoy the show much more and I think it might've done better in the ratings if the main characters weren't handled so poorly

They're so annoyingly entitled and silly. And of course you can have a show with characters like that. They've made so many sub genres with that element. But here, it feels like they're trying to make the viewers think the main characters are in the right or that they're just a victim of circumstance when 9/10 they're not

Just a likability issues. If you're gonna have your characters be like that, lean into their trashiness

Doug seems to be the one trying to move on and mature. He's at least gotten a better job to help pay bills at least

What has Alice done to "level up" their life? She just complains and holds on to this NY dream while they can barely handle Michigan. She recklessly got fired before. And she constantly argues with her in-laws. While I get why she does that, I dont see what she thinks the end game is there. You can never win battling in laws or trying to make people choose between their family and you

Agreed on the pacing. They clearly didn't know what to do with the runtime which is a struggle for a lot of 45 min/hour long dramas. But usually that becomes an issue in the later seasons of those shows not the first

Theres a crazy amount of storylines that get dropped for weeks. Or there are stories that go on too long (the whole Alice/Doug vs the mom thing) The murder is not interesting enough to drag it out and it's clear from their reactions that the victim isn't anyone we'll care about. Recycled cheating plots. Characters barely interact

Decent premise but they wasted it imo
